[SDCPJ] Fwd: last minute counter recruitment work

Greetings high school outreach activists:

I apologize for the last minute request but the new school year snuck up on me!

We did great work together last year passing out over 16,000 leaflets educating students about the war in Iraq and the recruiters lies.  From this work grew an active coalition of students, teachers and parents called the Education Not Arms Coalition.  This group gathered thousands of signatures on a petition to the school board, testified regularly at the school board & students held sit ins and walk outs.  Check out this link for more details on this work.

From this coalition came the growing knowledge of students being placed into JROTC without requesting it.  Starting on monday, students will be registering at Mission Bay high school and we want to give them all flyers letting them know that they don't have to take JROTC if they don't want it.

Therefore, I'm sending out a last minute request to see if anyone can come to Mission Bay high for any amount of time Monday - Thursday.  I will have someone meet you there with the flyers.  Just let me know if you would like to leaflet, what day and for what period of time and I'll coordinate it with you.  (EG: Tues. 9-10:30 etc...)

With the last minute notice we appreciate any time you might give.

Questions & comments?  Reply to this e-mail or call me at 619-237-8870

Interesting, I for one am not running to the Republican camp.

Sen. John McCain's (R-Ariz.) campaign and the media would have us believe that herds of disaffected women voters will be stampeding to the Republicans this year because a woman candidate won't be on the presidential ballot in November.

McCain's campaign has been making a clear play for women voters in recent weeks, hosting conference calls with Republican women and touting that his policies on national security, the economy and healthcare appeal to women voters.

[SDCPJ] Day #5 "Camping" outside of Brian Bilbray's office in Solana Beach

Dear Peace Friends:

Today, Friday, August 22nd, was our 5th and final day "camping" outside of Brian Bilbray's office.

Four vets staffed the "camp" today and were greeted positively by most folks on the street and those entering and leaving the parking area.

Based on previous discussions with Bilbray staffers, I have calls in to both the District Director and his DC Chief of Staff to book personal visits by our six person veteran group.  The Chief of Staff visit will be before Sept 7th and the personal Bilbray visit will be in early October (Congress adjourns on Sept 27th).  We look forward to both visits and are diligently preparing our "pitch" for both meetings.

THANK YOU to  everyone who has called the Bilbray office, stopped by, or otherwise supported our "campout".  Your response has been huge and I'm sure that the Bilbray staff is happy it is over.

We will keep you informed of the outcome of our meetings as they transpire.

I have included two pictures we took on Monday as we set up shop outside of Bilbray's office.

Peace.

Subject: Fw: Day #4 "Camping" outside of Brian Bilbray's office in Solana Beach

Dear Peace Friends:

Day #4 brought out some interesting visitors to "Camp Bilbray".

"Betsy" came by and wished us well .... we appreciated seeing her.

Our next visitor was "Jo-Jo", a disabled vet in one of those joy-stick driven wheel chairs, who drove down the sidewalk and asked for a hug from the vets.  We were thrilled to hug him.  He told us stories about being in the Army in Afghanistan and how he was hurt in a firefight there.  He is very upset by what he sees as poor care for his veteran friends, also wounded.  He was energized by our being out on the street but took off after 45 minutes when two fire trucks went by and appeared to be turning into his neighborhood.  God Bless Jo-Jo.

Our last visitor was a reporter from the North County Times who spoke with Max and me at some length about why we were out there again in the hot sun.  She was very kind and we look forward to her article soon.

Tomorrow (Friday) marks our last day camping at "Camp Bilbray" and I have agreed to call both Bilbray's Chief of Staff and District Director to book appointments for our group with the Chief of Staff immediately and Mr. Bilbray in early October.  They are now very interested that we call and book appointments .... and stay home :)

Thanks for your support to date .... if you would once again call 858-350-1150 and tell the receptionist that you support the VETS out on the street, we would appreciate it.

Peace.

Dear Peace Friends:

Day #3 (Wednesday) "camping" outside of Brian Bilbray's office was uneventful, although we were visited by 5-6 great folks who also took the time to go in and speak with Bilbray's staffers.

As stated yesterday, Bilbray's chief of staff has now agreed to book a personal meeting between Brian Bilbray and the Veterans For Peace in early October after Bilbray returns from Wash, DC.  We have been holding off contacting them on the specific date/time as we felt it best to complete a week of camping before booking the date.

YOUR CALLS TO BILBRAY'S OFFICE have been many and consistent and I have been told by callers that they sound "tired of hearing the same request" (i.e. - Meet with the Vets).  The "campers" thank you for your support and request that you keep calling (or visiting at 462 Stevens Avenue, Suite 107, Solana Beach, CA  92075) until at least Friday, August 22nd at noon.

Peace.

Dear Peace Friends:

Day #2 of "camping" outside of Brian Bilbray's Solana Beach office was staffed by five (5) San Diego Veterans For Peace, plus one visiting member.

About 9:30 AM, Steve Danon, Congressman Bilbray's Washington DC Chief of Staff, came out to offer us coffee, water and access to bathrooms.

We briefly discussed why we were there, and how important it is that we get a personal visit with the Congressman (no 25 year old staffers, please, this year).

He assured us that Congressman Bilbray would meet with us personally in early October once Congress recessed again on September 27th and he returned to the district, but no firm date/time was established.

We thanked him for his time, and said that we would be in touch.

After discussing the situation between our members, we agreed to continue our vigil outside his office until at least Friday, August 22nd, to maintain our leverage in obtaining a personal appointment with Congressman Bilbray, which is unfortunately very rare.

PLEASE KEEP CALLING HIS OFFICE (858-350-1150) .... your calls yesterday and last night brought his DC Chief of Staff out to meet us today, and will add to our leverage in obtaining our personal meeting.

We suggest that you tell the staffer who answers the phone (Mitch, Laura, others) that you are upset about how poorly Congressman Bilbray treats 50th district veterans and veteran's needs.  Second, please tell the staffer that Congressman Bilbray should meet with the small constituent group from San Diego Veterans For Peace, "camping" outside his office, at his first opportunity.

We thank you for your calls so far

Peace.

A FORCE MORE POWERFUL

A CENTURY OF NONVIOLENT CONFLICT

Friday Sept 5, 2008  7:30pm

Two-Part Documentary Explores
The Triumph of Nonviolent PowerThroughout the World in the 20th Century

 Ben Kingsley Narrates Series

A FORCE MORE POWERFUL: A CENTURY OF NONVIOLENT CONFLICT, a riveting three-hour documentary tells one of humanity’s most important and least understood stories – how, during a century of extreme violence, millions chose to battle brutality and oppression with nonviolent weapons – and won.

A FORCE MORE POWERFUL uses stunning archival footage to present stories of successful nonviolent movements around the world. Each includes interviews with witnesses, survivors and unsung heroes who contributed to these century-changing events.  In part 1 the stories include:

The 1960 Nashville, Tennessee campaign to desegregate the city’s downtown business district, which was emblematic of the American civil rights movement. It profiles the Rev. James Lawson Jr., who studied Gandhi’s techniques in Nagpur, India and later joined forces with Martin Luther King Jr. to become a principal architect of the African-American struggle. His intensive training workshops for college students on the techniques of nonviolent resistance drove the success of the Nashville sit-ins and boycott, and became what King called “the model of the movement.”

Mohandas Gandhi’s famous Salt March of 1930, during which he enjoined Indians to protest the British salt monopoly – a turning point in the movement that paved the way for India’s independence from Britain. Gandhi, the most influential figure in the history of nonviolent resistance, steered a shrewdly strategic, ever-escalating course of “noncooperation” that included mass demonstrations, strikes, and the boycott of British goods.

The consumer boycott campaign against apartheid in the black townships of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa in the mid 1980s, led by the young activist Mkhuseli Jack. Radicalized at the age of 18 by laws that kept him from enrolling in school, Jack founded the influential Port Elizabeth Youth Congress and became a key leader of strikes, boycotts, and other grassroots efforts, which reverberated throughout the country and were instrumental in defeating apartheid and freeing Nelson Mandela.

The national protest days led by Chilean copper miners in 1983, which overcame a decade of paralyzing fear, showed that public opposition to the dictatorship of Gen. Augusto Pinochet was possible, and signaled the start of a nonviolent democratic opposition. Brutally repressed, opposition forces persisted and eventually removed Pinochet’s military government in a 1988 referendum..

“Although it is indebted to the many leaders of these movements, history shows that strategy and discipline determine a campaign’s success,” says filmmaker Steve York.

“The stories that comprise A FORCE MORE POWERFUL demonstrate how nonviolent conflict is enacted through well-planned campaigns.”

“The greatest misconception about conflict in our century is that violence is always the ultimate form of power,” says Peter Ackerman, the series editor and principal content advisor. “But Indians, Danes, Poles, South Africans, Chileans, African-Americans, and many others have proven that to be wrong.”

“The ability to produce enormous change without violence shouldn’t come as a surprise,” observes York. “We see nonviolent change occurring every day – through political diplomacy, popular culture, and advertising. What makes strategic nonviolent action so compelling, and so important, is that it cannot only induce change; it can do so in the face of violent opposition. It’s happened many times before. It can happen again.”

Jamaican World Beyond Tourism

Examining the Third World amid the process of globalism, Black found an intelligent and realistic view in the Jamaican people that is largely absent among the American public. "The people who are living under the structural adjustment programs, whose lives are impacted by this everyday, who when they go take a loan out, they know the interest rates are set by an IMF policy, have this clear understanding [of the IMF's function]."

Pausing, Black adds, "That's what catalyzed the making of this film. Living in a country that was under an IMF program and realizing how little I knew about it, yet I came from the country that held the strongest voting power in the IMF, so where does my responsibility and culpability lie?"

Blackwater

Blackwater guards face prosecution over killing of 17 Iraqi civilians

Blackwater guards face prosecution over killing of 17 Iraqi civilians

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008
By James Bone | Six Blackwater Worldwide security guards have been notified that they could face prosecution in America for shooting dead 17 civilians in Baghdad's Nisoor Square in an infamous incident that provoked fury in Iraq.
The Blackwater employees have reportedly been sent "target letters" by US prosecutors telling them that they could face charges for opening fire at the crowded intersection on September 16 last year.

The move was welcomed by human rights activists, who have long complained about US private security in Iraq.

"It's incredibly important that these incidents are not beyond the law. It certainly would be a step in the right direction if the US would go ahead and bring charges," said Jennifer Daskal, of Human Rights Watch, who has interviewed the traffic policeman on duty in Nisoor Square at the time of the shooting. "This is definitely the most high-profile case of contractor abuse in Iraq, but it's certainly not the only one."

The shootings sparked a crisis in relations between the US and the Iraqi Government, which threatened to expel Blackwater. In negotiations on a new bilateral security agreement, the Iraqis have pressed for all foreign personnel to be subject to Iraqi law.

Washington has agreed to place contractors under Iraqi jurisdiction, but is still refusing to allow Iraq to put US troops or officials on trial. Blackwater, based in North Carolina, has announced that it is moving out of private security and will concentrate on training, aviation and logistics.

The Blackwater guards, all former US servicemen on contract to protect US State Department personnel, opened fire after their motorcade entered Nisoor Square. US officials initially said that the motorcade was travelling to the heavily guarded Green Zone when a car bomb exploded, followed by volleys of small-arms fire that disabled one of the vehicles.

In remarks prepared for a congressional hearing but never delivered because of the investigation, Erik Prince, the chairman of Blackwater, claimed that the guards had "returned fire at threatening targets", including "men with AK47s firing on the convoy" and "approaching vehicles that appeared to be suicide car bombers".

Witnesses said that the four-car convoy, protected by two helicopters, did a U-turn and started going the wrong way round the square before stopping in the middle and opening fire without provocation.

Earlier reports suggested that the FBI was focusing on three Blackwater guards. The Washington Post reported that six had been sent "target letters" - a prelude to possible prosecution.

The US employs 190,000 contractors in Iraq, including 25,000 to 30,000 private security guards. Although heavily armed, the private security contractors enjoy immunity from Iraqi law under a decree issued by Paul Bremer the day before he stepped down as head of the Coalition Provisional Authority in June 2004.

Contractors hired by the US Defence Department can be prosecuted in US courts for crimes committed overseas under the Military Extraterritorial Jurisdiction Act of 2000. That law was expanded in 2004 to include contractors working "in support" of the Pentagon.

A federal grand jury has heard testimony from three dozen people, but a decision about whether to indict the Blackwater guards may not be made until October, the newspaper said. Experts compare the case to a police shooting where an officer is accused of using excessive force, but say it will be even harder to prove in a US court.

The victims' families have been offered $10,000 (about £5,400) compensation for each person killed, but most have refused what one called "blood money". The families are suing Blackwater in the US courts.

Anne Tyrell, a Blackwater spokeswoman, said: "If it is determined that an individual acted improperly, Blackwater would support holding that person accountable. But at this stage, without being able to review evidence collected in an ongoing investigation, we will not prejudge the actions of any individual."

March 2004: Four employees killed and mutilated in Fallujah
June 2004: Security firms granted immunity from prosecution under Iraqi law
September 2007: Blackwater guards open fire in Nisoor Square in Baghdad, killing 17 Iraqis and wounding two dozen

October 2007: US House passes Bill to make contractors in Iraq subject to prosecution in US courts. Iraq demands that the US end its association with Blackwater and approves draft law revoking their immunity

November 2007: FBI investigation concludes that at least 14 of the September shootings were unjustified

April 2008: Iraqi Government upset by news that the US State Department is renewing Blackwater's contract to protect its embassy staff

August 2008: US prosecutors send letters to six Blackwater security guards in a move that could lead to groundbreaking criminal indictments. The Iraqi Government emphasises its own right to prosecute the company

[SanDiegoforBarackObama] McCain Mansions: The Houses That Greed Built

.
http://www.dipdive.com/dip-politics/wato/

From:"Robert Greenwald"

Subject:McCain's Mansions: The Houses That Greed Built

1. Watch the video
2. Send it to everyone you know
"Most working families today do not have homes that have anywhere near ten rooms. John McCain has ten houses. Many working people in America have to work two and three jobs to provide for their families and pay their car loans. John McCain hops on a private jet. Is it any wonder why McCain champions a George Bush agenda of cutting taxes for corporations and the wealthy, helping oil companies turn record profits, and leaving working families to fend for themselves? McCain's velvet world leaves him utterly unprepared to make the tough choices we need to restore the middle class and ensure that everyone in America has quality, affordable health insurance."
- Andy Stern, President, Service Employees International Union (SEIU)
Dear Supporter,
John McCain is soaring to new heights of hypocrisy on his wife's personal jet. He flies around the country bent on duping the public into believing he's "one of them," a regular guy who can empathize with Americans facing an overwhelming economic crush. What's more, he disparages those who oppose his ridiculous policy proposals as "elitist." But who's the real elitist?
The REAL McCain is a multimillionaire who owns ten luxurious homes. The REAL McCain backs President Bush's tax cuts for big corporations. The REAL McCain empathizes only with the interests of our nation's wealthy minority, not its money-strapped majority. But far too many are buying into McCain's deceit because the corporate press won't present the whole picture, so we created this video to educate the public about the REAL McCain.
Watch the video and send it to everyone you know.
Together, you have been a force in making sure The REAL McCain videos have been seen by nearly 6.5 million people. But as Frank Rich noted in his NY Times column yesterday, 40% of Americans hear too little about McCain from the mainstream media, meaning "the public doesn't know who on earth John McCain is." That's why it's crucial you ensure this video is seen by as many as possible, and that we use each and every tool at our disposal to get the word out. Send this on to five friends and family members, and tell them to send it to five people they know. Get it to your local news outlets and blogs and networking sites like Digg. Raise hell about McCain's economic duplicity!
AFL-CIO President John Sweeney summed it up best when he said McCain "simply doesn't understand the challenges America's working families are facing because he isn't remotely affected by them." It's up to us to tell people who McCain really is, a jet-setting elitist more concerned with corporate lobbyists than hard-working Americans.
Yours,
Robert Greenwald

[SDCPJ] [Fwd: Day #2 "Camping" outside of Brian Bilbray's office in Solana Beach]

The Urgency of Impeachment

The Urgency of Impeachment

By Jeeni Criscenzo

In the process of editing blogs for a book on the birth of the Progressive Movement, I've come to the sobering realization that all the marches, demonstrations, forums and protests I've written about in the past five years have failed to change anything of consequence. It's as if no one ever warned, "If you attack Iraq, it will be a catastrophe." It's as if no one ever marched a million-strong, year after year, against the ongoing funding of the occupation of Iraq; as if no one ever contacted their congressperson or senator to voice their opposition to warrant-less wiretapping, torture, rendition or off-shore drilling; as if no one ever wrote against imprisoning Sami al-Arian, denying habeas corpus to the Gtimo prisoners, or the shredding of our Constitution. It's as if scientists never proved humans are causing global warming and no one ever called for universal, single-payer healthcare. And most upsetting of all, it's as if all the Democratic candidates we worked so hard to get elected in Congress, have no idea why they were elected.

Even on a local level, I see the same issues I worked against when I was campaigning three years ago, still being fought - the Sunrise Powerlink, the LEAPS project, the Mitsubishi Robertson's Concrete Plant, the granite quarry in Temecula. I'm sure you have similar issues wherever you live, and have run up against the same brick wall. Even when you think you've won, they come back and defeat you, like Blackwater has done in San Diego, and Mitsubishi Robertson has done here in my hometown of Oceanside.

It's hard not to feel burnt out. It's almost impossible not to just throw my hands up in the air and give up. But what's at stake, if we do give up, is so horrendous that we can't stop now. This goes beyond the environmental issues in my hometown (I can always move) or the survival of the United States (we can just keep our heads low and adjust to living under fascism), or even the demise of civilization. What is happening threatens the survival of the human species - maybe even of all life! Against this unthinkable outcome, we must all work to our last breath.

I'm NOT talking about working for the Obama campaign! As terrifying as a McCain presidency is, we can't waste precious time on the charade our Presidential election has become. If we don't do something NOW, there might not be an election in ten weeks. Sadly, even if we have an election, no matter how hard we work for Obama, the outcome can easily be manipulated, as it was for the past two presidential elections. And even if Obama wins, and by some miracle he IS the courageous leader we all want him to be, it's unlikely he will be able to undo the damage that will be done by Bush between now and his inauguration.

Do not make the mistake of thinking that George W. Bush is a lame duck. He is going full speed ahead with his agenda, unhampered by anything so trivial as worrying about reelection. Carol Wolman, Congressional candidate for CA Dist 1 (Green Party), recently sent me the following list of what Bush has done in the past couple of weeks!

I was dismayed to read in an email from someone going to Denver for the Democratic Convention, how she was anticipating all of the parties she will be attending there. I pray that while going from one festive event to the next that she notices the demonstrations planned outside - particularly the ones calling for impeachment. This is no time to be fiddling while Rome burns!

While most Americans are paying attention to the Olympics, the election or whatever new distraction this crowd has in store for us, the final nails are being hammered into our collective coffin. The Bushies do not plan to go softly into this dark night. They are orchestrating the end of life as we know it, with the hubris to think they will end up ruling the world. They are Nero on steroids! There seems to be only one way to halt the catastrophic actions this administration has planned for the coming weeks. We must force this cuckold Congress to begin impeachment hearings!

Conyers has called back the members of the Judiciary Committee to investigate Ron Suskind's revelations that the Bush administration forged "evidence" of the WMDs in Iraq. But the Judiciary committee cannot enforce subpoenas as long as Bush can reassure witnesses that he will pardon them. Introduce the possibility that the President can be impeached and his promises of pardons suddenly become worthless. As long as Nancy Pelosi continues to block impeachment, John Conyers and his committee are impotent.

I don't know why this woman, this mother and grandmother, is single-handedly sealing the fate of humanity, by blocking our only hope to stop the disasters this administration has in store for us. I don't care if she's afraid for her life, or her family, of if she's afraid her complicity in allowing torture will be revealed. The excuse that there is not enough time to impeach is meaningless - the point is to START impeachment. Whatever Pelosi's reasons, she MUST be convinced that the consequences of not impeaching far outweigh any rationale for blocking it. She must be convinced to start impeachment hearings now.

Is it too late to impeach? It's not too late to START impeachment hearings. Even if we can't complete the impeachment process, by starting the hearings we will put the brakes on the agenda of the administration, dissolve the power of their promises of pardon and maybe even force Bush and Cheney to resign. Consider today's headlines: Pakistan's Musharraf steps down - Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf is resigning after nine years in power, amid impeachment charges based on claims he violated the constitution. If it can happen in Pakistan, it can happen here!

It is our responsibility, as protectors of the human race, to convince Pelosi and Congress to begin impeachment hearings now. How do we do it?

Sign the Kucinich Petition. On August 1st, Congressman Dennis Kucinich delivered a petition with over 100,000 Americans calling for the President to be held accountable. On Sept. 10th, Kucinich wants to deliver 1 million signatures to Speaker Pelosi and Congress. Like most of you, I've grown weary of signing petitions that don't change anything. I don't know if a million signatures will have any more impact on Pelosi than 100,000. But I do know that starting impeachment hearings is our best hope for changing the horrible future this administration has in store for us. If you haven't already signed Kucinich's petition, it only takes a minute to do it now (http://www.kucinich.us ) and pass this on to everyone you know. (If you signed the original petition, there is no need to sign it again).

Watch the play. If you have a half-hour to spare, go to www.impeachmentplay.com to watch a play produced during Shirley Golub's primary challenge against Nency Pelosi.

Support Impeachment with your attire. I stopped wearing my "Impeach Bush & Cheney" t-shirts because I didn't want to alienate myself from my Republican neighbors. But saving our nation is a non-partisan issue. I am not going to hold back anymore. Today, I'm wearing a shirt that shows Bush and Cheney behind bars with the words, "I have a Dream". I'm promising to wear the Impeach message every day until hearings begin. And I urge everyone who realizes the urgency of this situation to join me. Click here to buy Impeachment T-Shirts or send an email to Barbara at sdwalker33@sbcglobal.net

Support Impeachment with your presence. If you can afford it, consider traveling to these events, or help to organize an event closer to home - especially if Nancy Pelosi or anyone from this administration will be in town.

Support impeachment by supporting Cindy Sheehan:

Cindy Sheehan is running for Congress as an independent against Nancy Pelosi for California's 8th District (San Francisco). What better way to show Speaker Pelosi that the people are fed up with her failure to protect the Constitution, than to fire her! Cindy would make a fantastic Representative and has proven she is not afraid to do what's best for the people. Even if you don't live in San Francisco, you can send Cindy's campaign a contribution at www.cindyforcongress.org .

Support impeachment with your wallet:

The National Impeachment Network has decided to run ads in the Washington Post the week Congress comes back from vacation. The ads for the weekday editions of the Washington Post will be published on Sept. 8, 10, 11 and 12, and the one half page ad will be published on Sunday Sept. 14th. Make a contribution to help pay for these ads to IMPEACH GROUPS, 117 Chestnut Dr., Wayne, NJ 07470-5639. Want to know more? Contact INFO

A FORCE MORE POWERFUL

A CENTURY OF NONVIOLENT CONFLICT

Friday Sept 5, 2008  7:30pm

Two-Part Documentary Explores
The Triumph of Nonviolent PowerThroughout the World in the 20th Century
 Ben Kingsley Narrates Series
A FORCE MORE POWERFUL: A CENTURY OF NONVIOLENT CONFLICT, a riveting three-hour documentary tells one of humanity's most important and least understood stories – how, during a century of extreme violence, millions chose to battle brutality and oppression with nonviolent weapons – and won.
A FORCE MORE POWERFUL uses stunning archival footage to present stories of successful nonviolent movements around the world. Each includes interviews with witnesses, survivors and unsung heroes who contributed to these century-changing events.  In part 1 the stories include:
The 1960 Nashville, Tennessee campaign to desegregate the city's downtown business district, which was emblematic of the American civil rights movement. It profiles the Rev. James Lawson Jr., who studied Gandhi's techniques in Nagpur, India and later joined forces with Martin Luther King Jr. to become a principal architect of the African-American struggle. His intensive training workshops for college students on the techniques of nonviolent resistance drove the success of the Nashville sit-ins and boycott, and became what King called "the model of the movement."
Mohandas Gandhi's famous Salt March of 1930, during which he enjoined Indians to protest the British salt monopoly – a turning point in the movement that paved the way for India's independence from Britain. Gandhi, the most influential figure in the history of nonviolent resistance, steered a shrewdly strategic, ever-escalating course of "noncooperation" that included mass demonstrations, strikes, and the boycott of British goods.
Brutally repressed, opposition forces persisted and eventually removed Pinochet's military government in a 1988 referendum..
"Although it is indebted to the many leaders of these movements, history shows that strategy and discipline determine a campaign's success," says filmmaker Steve York.
"The stories that comprise A FORCE MORE POWERFUL demonstrate how nonviolent conflict is enacted through well-planned campaigns."
"The greatest misconception about conflict in our century is that violence is always the ultimate form of power," says Peter Ackerman, the series editor and principal content advisor. "But Indians, Danes, Poles, South Africans, Chileans, African-Americans, and many others have proven that to be wrong."
"The ability to produce enormous change without violence shouldn't come as a surprise," observes York. "We see nonviolent change occurring every day – through political diplomacy, popular culture, and advertising. What makes strategic nonviolent action so compelling, and so important, is that it cannot only induce change; it can do so in the face of violent opposition. It's happened many times before. It can happen again."

Revealing the Transparent: Stephanie Black Unveils the
Jamaican World Beyond Tourism
