La VOZ Birthday Issue

La Voz Updated Logo

Help Me Celebrate My Birthday!Stitch
For the last couple of years I have gathered with friends to celebrate my birthday, each year topping the previous year. So after much thought and many suggestions as what to do today to celebrate I have decided that I much rather give a gift than receive a gift! By that I mean I would rather save the money we would have spent on drinks, food, and cover and instead make a donation to one of my favorite local organizations.

Please join me in supporting the work of the Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE) by making a gift in any amount today. I am not kidding any amount.... $1, $5, $10, $20 or more! This is tax deductible donation that will support the groundbreaking work that the Parent Institute is doing. You can make a donation by clicking on the link below. For tracking purposes please place my initials, "PCA" on the second Billing Address Line.

Nothing would make me happier on my birthday to know that we positively affected the lives of hundreds of families. If you like to join me in making a secure online gift to the Parent Institute for Quality Education please click the following link:

Kidney Early Evaluation Program (KEEP),  is a free, targeted, community screening for individuals at high risk for developing kidney disease. Those at "high risk" include individuals who have diabetes, high blood pressure, or have a first degree relative with diabetes, high blood pressure or kidney disease.  The screening takes about one hour for the participant to complete. The tests conducted include blood pressure, physical measurements, and blood and urine tests. Blood pressure results, the blood glucose and the urine tests are received by the participant on the day of the screening.  The remaining test results are sent to the participants in 3-4 weeks in a comprehensive, easy to read report.

Am I even at risk?
Since August of 2000, 30% of those screened by the KEEP found that they had some stage of CKD yet only 2% were aware of it before the screening. California contains a significant percentage of those populations at greatest risk for kidney disease: Hispanics/Latinos, African Americans and Pacific Islanders.  Other populations at high risk are Native Americans and the elderly. It is the goal of the National Kidney Foundation of Southern California to target individuals in these high risk groups who process a risk factor for CKD, identify those who have CKD, then provide education and referral in hopes that their kidney disease can be can be slowed or stopped.

But isn't the screening expensive?
No, it is completely free!

World Aids Day - FREE Rapid HIV Antibody Testing

WHAT: An eight-person team from UC San Diego's Antiviral Research Center will provide free and confidential rapid HIV testing from its new mobile van between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

WHEN: World AIDS Day, Monday, December 1
WHERE: City College, 1313 Park Blvd San Diego, California 92101 on the quad (grassy area at center of campus, across from the cafeteria)

UCSD Antiviral Research Center personnel will be providing free, rapid HIV antibody testing PLUS the Early Test at City College on World AIDS Day. The Early Test is a specialized HIV test that tests directly for the virus, not just the antibody, and detects the virus as early as one week after exposure. (The standard HIV antibody test requires that an individual wait several weeks to months after a potential exposure.) The Early Test is free, confidential, and is offered as part of a UC San Diego School of Medicine research study. The testing process takes approximately 40 minutes and also detects Hepatitis C infection. The Early Test Program is a collaboration between the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency and the UCSD Antiviral Research Center.

For additional information on where residents can get this test for free, go to: https://theearlytest.ucsd.edu.
