Hola el Grupo and Amigos....
Mark your calendars! November 15, 2008...4:00 PM...Grape Day Park, Escondido...
As you know, the Latino community and various Latino organizations, as well as civil rights groups, have expressed a clear message to the Escondido Police Department that WE DO NOT WANT DRIVERS LICENSE CHECKPOINTS!
Residents and citizens alike know that these checkpoints are a veiled attempt to enforce immigration laws. And this attempt comes in the form of intimidation with more that 35 drivers license checkpoints a year, far more than any other local law enforcement agency in this county. This is not mentioning the fact that these checkpoints are the antithesis of a free society where police are supposed to have probable cause before being able to legally stop a person. It is NO COINCIDENCE that the agency to take this controversial practice to the extreme is from the same city that attempted to enforce the illegal rental ban ordinance, which did not survive a legal review.
What's worse is the effect that these checkpoints have on Latino families. While the police claim that they do not enforce immigration law, they have been witnessed to do just that, arresting persons on the spot and getting them deported...a function that should be left to immigration officials. Recently, several cases have come to our attention where mothers have been arrested in the presence of their children at checkpoints for immigration law violation by the Escondido Police Department...the same department that is supposed to be called when law enforcement intervention is needed.
This is precisely the reason why local police should avoid enforcing immigration laws. Latino families (many of whom have members that are U.S. citizens, members who are legal residents, and members who are undocumented - all in the same family), particularly women and children, will pay a high price for not calling the police when needed - out of fear our local police may decide to enforce federal immigration laws resulting in the destruction of families.
Help us with a strong show of support. Come to the candlelight vigil. Distribute the attached flyer. Latinos are part of this city, too. Help us show the Escondido Police that their policy of checkpoints is not in the best interest of our community nor of the City of Escondido.
Call me for more information.
Saludos,
