can bet all the military supporters will be taking it. You may also
help direct the district towards more humane budget cuts.

[SDCPJ] FW: Friendship Park this Sunday

The Friends of Friendship Park coalition will return to the park this Sunday afternoon and once again seek to celebrate communion with friends in Tijuana.  We will meet at 2:30 p.m. at the entrance to Border Field State Park.  Take Hwy 5 South, exit Dairy Mart Road, turn right and follow the winding road west to the park entrance.  Wear boots for hiking and bring documents verifying residence in the United States.  I hope you can join us.

 

Below my signature you can see a photo of the new chain-link fence that has been erected to eliminate beach access.  This will present us with some difficult choices on Sunday, which we will discuss together before hiking to the beach.

There are several things you can do to support the effort, even if you are unable to participate on Sunday:

1)      You can send a letter on-line to DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano – be sure to mention “Friendship Park” when you personalize your letter.

2)      You can donate now to support the costs of our events at the Park – be sure to indicate “Friendship Park” in the “dedication” line.

After a bit of a hiatus it's time to get out there and share the good news to high school students in the county.

These students teach peace and advocate for a college bound education instead of being tracked into the military.

Let's help spread the word to more students throughout the county.

.... and pens, pencils, paper, hats, gloves, etc. too!  Since most people's first reaction will likely be, "HUH?!"---- let me follow up quickly with "Citizen Diplomacy: Reaching out to the needy people in Afghanistan!" 

We have an opportunity to let the people of Afghanistan know that the people of the United States care about them, by filling "flat rate" boxes of donations to be shipped to Afghanistan!  Help put a smile on the face of a child half a world away!

The San Diego First Church of the Brethren, a Historic and Living  Peace Church, recently became aware of  this wonderful way to help meet the needs of God's children in Afghanistan.  During our "Sharing of Community Life" time in our Worship Service, a member recently shared that his neighbor's son, Ed, was stationed in Afghanistan, and was appalled by the poverty level there.  

As Ed's mother shared,
"Ed told me that the need is great for clothes for the children such as shoes, hats, gloves, coats, shirts and pants.  School supplies are needed.  People cook over an open campfire and metal pots and pans, not Teflon, would be good. He even mentioned plastic containers. They do not use silverware, but probably a big spoon would be nice.

As for collecting items to be sent, Ed said gently used goods are just fine, so anyone doing Spring Cleaning could donate those items too. I have gone to the dollar store to buy hats, gloves, and other clothes for the children. Thank you so much for your interest as the need is great, and material items reach individuals at the grass roots level."

If you have never had the experience of going to a school board for policy changes, this is a good tutorial on at least the public meeting part of the process. The camera doesn't point back at the 250 people in the audience, most of whom were waiving bright orange "NO WEAPONS TRAINING" signs; some also held up signs with the names of their schools.

 

By the way, the news was taken badly by the NRA and similar groups. For example: http://www.nraila.org/Legislation/Read.aspx?ID=4422. Their web sites have been generating negative mail and some nasty messages to us.

 

We've also had word that some JROTC people have met with one school board member (Shelia Jackson) to strategize on getting the decision reversed. The struggle is ongoing, but we also have reason to celebrate.

To Everyone Opposed to the Border Wall, The Brownsville City Commission is on the verge of making a deal with DHS.  This deal has immediate and long-term implications for border wall opposition nationwide.  If the the City of Brownsville enters into a deal with DHS, all hope for a last minute halt to border wall construction from the Obama administration may be lost.  In addition, a change in Brownsville's position could undermine all litigation related to the border wall, including El Paso's appeal to the Supreme Court.  Brownsville's failure to fight something that is so clearly an injustice and an imposition by the federal goverment may eventually lead to increased militarization of our borders over the long haul. The deal itself is a bad one.  The commissioners are touting the fact that DHS will build "temporary fencing" on Brownsville property, but the contract stipulates that before such temporary fencing comes down, Brownsville will have to pay the entire cost of constructing a new wall, this time a permanent concrete border wall built into the levee.  These levee-border walls have cost Hidalgo County $10-12 million per mile.  Since these walls become an inextricable part of the flood-control levee system, they will never be removed, even if we are one day successful in implementing a saner border policy.  However U.S. immigration policy changes over the coming decades, our grandchildren and great-grandchildren will be living walls because of the levee-border wall design. No Border Wall urges everyone, regardless of where you live, to make your voices heard and let Brownsville City Commissioners know that you too are a stakeholder.  If you live in the Rio Grande Valley, please make a concerted effort to attend the City Commission Public Hearing this Thursday night, February 12 at 5:30 pm at the City Commissioners' Court on the 2nd floor of the City Hall/Federal Building on the corner of 10th and Elizabeth Streets in Brownsville.  Plan to arrive 15 minutes early if possible to sign up for a public comment. If you live elsewhere or are unable to attend the public hearing, please copy and paste the following email addresses and send an email to the Brownsville mayor and city commissioners, letting them know that it's not only the future of Brownsville that's at stake, but the future of our borderlands and our nation as a whole.  You might tell them of your community's experience dealing with DHS and border wall construction and your group's ongoing efforts to stop wall construction. February 10, 2009 (see photos below) - San Diego Unified, located in the middle of one of the largest military complexes in the world, took the uncharacteristic step of banning rifle training conducted under the military's high school JROTC program. Eleven schools with rifle ranges were affected in the nation's eighth largest urban district.

 

Before the board meeting began, speakers representing local high schools and colleges addressed an outside crowd of 200 students, parents, teachers and community supporters. Some high schools sent so many students that two charter buses, courtesy of the AFSC, were used for transportation. Anticipating a long evening before the school board would discuss the rifle training issue, the Association of Raza Educators provided tamales to help sustain the crowd.

 

It wasn't until four hours into the board meeting, at 9:00 PM, that the agenda item came up for discussion. The vote was preceded by testimony from about 15 pro- and con- speakers in front of a crowd that was largely in favor of terminating the weapons training program. One school board member said that in all of his many years on the board, this was the most impressive student effort he had ever seen. Even two board members who opposed the resolution expressed their admiration for the students' involvement. When the decision was made, the resolution, which immediately banned all marksmanship training in the district, passed by a vote of 3-2. The crowd then spilled out of the auditorium to hold a loud and joyous celebration.

 

This achievement was made possible by a collaboration of students and various community groups who first came together in 2007 as the Education Not Arms Coalition. One of their main concerns was the way schools were tracking students into military training (via JROTC) while denying them adequate class alternatives, especially ones needed to qualify for college. Students from African American and Latino families were being disproportionately affected.

 

To address the problem, the coalition adopted three initial goals--convince the school district to:

 

-stop placing students into military science (JROTC) classes without their informed consent.

-stop telling parents and students that the class will help them qualify for college, when it won't.

-ban weapons training and JROTC gun ranges in San Diego schools.

 

All three goals have now been achieved, the first two by a superintendent's directive, the third by school board action. Throughout the over one-year long campaign, high school students have played a central role in educating and mobilizing their peers, with support from a variety of community and college groups.

BACKGROUND

On July 10th, 2008, a coalition led by the San Diego labor movement and the LGBT community called for a boycott of the Manchester Grand Hyatt. Manchester's Hyatt has brought the LGBT community UNITE HERE together to fight for equality for gay and lesbian couples and justice for the workers at his Hyatt hotel.  Doug Manchester has a history working against both:
 
·         Equality for lesbian and gay couples.  Doug Manchester is one of the leading funders ($125,000) of Proposition 8, a California ballot initiative that discriminates against LGBT couples.  The California LGBT community faces an extremely difficult fight to prevent an outright ban on their civil right to have legal recognition for same sex couples and equal protection for their families.  While Hyatt may officially disavow Manchester's contributions to Proposition 8 as a personal choice, the fact remains that their multi-million dollar LGBT marketing efforts must be seen as little more than sheer hypocrisy when the revenue this marketing attracts is then funneled into efforts that bite the hand which feeds them.  In such a situation, we always have the ability to choose not to feed them any longer. 
·         Justice for Manchester Hyatt workers. Manchester's Hyatt allegedly forces housekeepers to clean more rooms than housekeepers at other Hyatt hotels, including the other Hyatt hotel in San Diego.  In 2006, housekeepers began lunch hour protests against working conditions in the hotel, saying that their daily room quota had been increased from 17 to 30 rooms per shift!  We have no reason to believe that Manchester has made any workload reductions to address these protests. Across the hotel industry, increasing workloads have put a greater strain on housekeepers; work speedups have led to increasing injury rates.  According to the Department of Labor, injury rates for hotel workers are 40% higher than the service sector average. Hotel housekeeper injuries are debilitating. Back injuries, housemaids' knee (bursitis), and shoulder pain can lead to permanent disability. Numerous studies have shown that unreasonable workloads are a serious occupational health issue; here are a few facts that highlight the severity of that problem:
In a recent survey of more than 600 hotel housekeepers in the U.S. and Canada, 91% said that they have suffered work-related pain. Of those who reported workplace pain:
_ 77% said their workplace pain interfered with routine activities.
_ Two out of every three workers visited their doctor to deal with workplace    pain.
_ 66% took pain medication just to get through their daily quota.
