Sunday, May 17, 4:30 - 6:30 pm ;  Health Care Reform on the Agenda?

                     - Socialist Salon -
Discussions with Lefties on Burning Issues

For the first time in many years health care reform is being discussed seriously in the U.S. Congress. There is even a good chance that legislation providing some form of near-universal health insurance will pass and be signed by the President. The question is what will this reform look like? Almost everyone on the Left supports Single Payer health insurance.

ACTIVIST SAN DIEGO GENERAL MEETING - ALL WELCOME
Monday, May 18, 7PM: ASD Round Table Discussion -- Obama's First 100 Day's

Just as quick as it has begun, the grassroots activism driving the Obama Campaign quieted into idle observance. Yet, the need for an organized and vigilante citizenry has never been more important.

Join us for a critical analysis of President Obama's early record and discussion of how to ensure a true peoples' agenda triumphs over corporate-centrism.

Poems from Guantanamo — the Detainees Speak
Closing Guantanamo: Problems and Prospects

Since 2002, at least 775 men have been held in the U.S. detention center at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. According to Department of Defense data, fewer than half of them are accused of committing any hostile act against the United States or its allies. In hundreds of cases, even the circumstances of their initial detainment are questionable.

Friday, May 22,  2009 7:30 pm.  "Poems from Guantanamo" is a collection of poems that gives voice to the men held at Guantánamo. Available only because of the tireless efforts of pro bono attorneys who submitted each line to Pentagon scrutiny, Poems from Guantanamo brings together twenty-two poems by seventeen detainees, most still at Guantanamo, in legal limbo.   The collection was arranged by Marc Falkoff, an assistant professor at the Northern Illinois University College of Law and attorney for several Guantanamo prisoners.
