PEACE MONITOR TRAINING
There are 3 LGBT involved protests happening this week in which we will need specially trained Peace Monitor Volunteers in the nonviolent practices of the Quakers, Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Monitor volunteers will help to create a buffer zone at our San Diego High School Nonviolent, Peaceful, Positive Counter-Protest of Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church.
The training will be held at the Marriage Equality Building at 301 University Ave. in Hillcrest on WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14TH starting at 6:00PM - 8:30PM.
If you would like to volunteer as a Peace Monitor, arrive on time as we have a lot to cover, wear comfortable clothing you can move in, bring water, and a snack if you need. We encourage all volunteers to attend the Peace Monitor training as a learning experience, even if you don't feel you are able to volunteer as a Peace Monitor. FOR EQUAL RIGHTS AT SAN DIEGO HIGH SCHOOL.
Westboro Baptist Church Announces 30 Protest Sites in San Diego.
Founded in 1955 by controversial pastor Fred Phelps, the church is monitored as a hate group. Members of the congregation commonly protest against LGBT, Judaism and Catholicism. The group is also anti-Swedish, anti-Irish, and often chastises the United States as being "a sodomite nation of flag-worshiping idolaters". Phelps is a known "baiter" that oftentimes tries to get counter protesters to fight back, has been taking advance precautions to ensure that participants on both sides remain peaceful and nonviolent. Among groups who have been closely monitoring the WBC is the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). Founded in 1913 "to stop the defamation of the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment to all", the ADL is the nation's premier civil rights/human relations agency, fighting anti-Semitism and all forms of bigotry. They believe the WBC is carrying on this campaign in the hopes of getting reaction from the Jewish community and to garner media attention. While acknowledging the church's actions may be offensive, the ADL is asking members of the Jewish community to respond by not responding. "We are recommending for the Jewish community to pay them no mind. Give them their 30 minutes of useless disgusting protest and let them go back to their obscurity." Members of the gay community are taking a different approach. There will be a Nonviolent, Peaceful, political Counter-Protest for Equal Rights at San Diego High School on Friday, October 16th from 2:00 - 3:00PM. Organized counter demonstrations will overshadow this hate group's message with a message of respect, freedom and equality for all people.

SIGN MAKING PARTY FOR THE WESTBORO BAPTIST COUNTER PROTEST AT SAN DIEGO HIGH SCHOOL.
The Metropolitan Community Church of San Diego (www.TheMetChurch.org) will host a sign making party for those participating in the counter WBC demonstrations at our new church campus at 2633 Denver Street. The event will take place in the first floor community room and participants are invited to bring poster board, posts, paints, markers, and great ideas. Donations of materials are also welcome. Directions: from downtown, take I-5N to Claremont Drive/Mission Bay exit, turn right, go one block to Denver Street, turn right. Church is on the left in the middle of the first block. Parking next to building or on street. (If coming from the north, take Claremont Drive/Mission Bay exit, turn left, over bridge, turn right at Denver. Church is still on the left in the middle of the first block.) Everyone supporting the counter protests is invited.
FYI: Passing along this link to a cool fundraiser for during the Fred Phelps protests next weekend. This site collects monetary pledges for each minute that Fred Phelps is protesting. The money goes to a local group, in this case, it goes to ensure that the San Diego High School GSA is able to reform (they had to disband a while back).
