An Insurance Victory, Don't Keep It A Secret

Walter —

This weekend Gov. Schwarzenegger signed Assemblyman Dave Jones's bill to keep alive California's innovative Low-Cost Auto Insurance Program for low-income drivers, which would have expired without this legislation.

As poverty rates reach their highest levels in decades, this is a critical victory. Low-Cost Auto Insurance, with premiums as low as $161 a year and no cost to taxpayers, allows cash-strapped motorists a chance to drive legally. That's not just good for low-income drivers; it's a relief to everyone on the road when fewer people drive uninsured. Watch the KGO-TV News story.

But there's a problem: many insurance companies and agents aren't telling prospective policyholders about the program, even though they're required to by law. As a result, there are thousands of eligible motorists driving without insurance when they could be covered.

Should You Have Been Told?
If you have a basic "15/30" car insurance policy (sometimes called a minimum limits policy), or have been shopping for a basic policy, your company or agent should have given you information about the Low-Cost Program. If you were never told that you might qualify for the Low Cost policy please let us know.

We're also working with community and government agencies throughout the state to raise awareness about the program. If you want to help that effort, please consider making a tax-deductible donation.

The low-cost auto insurance program is an example of government finding an innovative way to address a serious problem and doing it without stretching taxpayer dollars. Let's make sure the people this program is supposed to help are actually finding out about it.

Thanks for everything,
