Letters from Californians are needed ASAP to defeat SB 251 in the state legislature.
SB 251 would automatically register males with Selective Service--for a possible future military draft--if they apply for a driver's license or license renewal in California. Many states have adopted some form of this legislation, but sometimes it has been watered down or made contingent on reimbursement from the federal government (which has been denied). California is one of the states that have rejected any linkage of licenses to draft registration. In fact, California has so far rejected it four times since 2000!
SB 251 is scheduled for its first hearing in the senate transportation and housing committee on March 29. The attached alert tells people where to send/fax letters and gives talking points.
NOTE: Sen. Christine Kehoe (D) from San Diego is on the committee.
