Under pressure from the ACLU and community groups, the San Diego County Board is revising its proposed redistricting map to account for the voting rights of Latinos and African Americans in the First District in South County. However, the Board is resisting other changes to its self-serving redistricting plan.
Unless we speak up, Escondido will continue to be split off from similar communities along the Hwy 78 corridor and instead remain in District 3 with more affluent communities to the south and west. One of the many negative results of this split is the fracturing of Latino voting power in North County.
In addition, the supervisors plan to move La Jolla into District 4 with Mid-City communities, and Lemon Grove and Spring Valley will be in District 2, divided from similar communities of interest.
