Welcome to the weekly ASD newsletter for August 15, 2011 #581 Monday, August 15, 2011 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM Joyce Beers Community Center 4065 Vermont St., San Diego, CA 92103 Come early, limited seating Activist San Diego presents If you think the "Debt Deal" stinks, wait until you find out how they pulled off this heist, with the full complicity of the media! This month, ASD brings together a panel of experts, including Congressman Bob Filner, Lorena Gonzalez of the Labor Council, Floyd Morrow, Dr. Jeoff Gordon and Corinne Wilson of CPI, to analyze and deconstruct how an artificial 'crises' was created, just as outlined in Naomi Klein's book " Shock Doctrine: The rise of disaster capitalism". Learn about the real issues and challenges we face beyond the sound-byte rhetoric in the corporate broadcast media. We will explore the economic, political, and media realities we face and what we can do, going forward, to immunize ourselves against such artificial 'crises' that are so obviously designed to manipulate our society for the benefit of the very few. more… MARK YOUR CALENDAR for these additional ASD events! Saturday, August 27th Economic Summit for a Better San Diego 9:00 am – 2:00 pm Horace Mann Middle School, 4345 54th St., San Diego, CA 92115 Join the region's leading community organizations (including Activist San Diego) for a day-long discussion on the economic issues that affect the lives of all San Diegans. The Labor Council began reaching out to community groups several months ago and together they have hammered out a list of issues, a schedule and framework for the summit. Focusing on jobs, quality of life, prosperity, equality and fairness, the coalition wants to change the narrative in San Diego, getting away from the right-wing dominance of discussion of issues in the media, moving away from, for example, a monopolization of the pension issue to more everyday issues like ‘where are the jobs?’ and other quality of life concerns. The license is actually a construction permit that allows ASD to build a radio tower, and we are very busy activists, kicking original radio content, technical capacity and fundraising into high gear. As if this weren't uplifting enough news for the progressive, radical left in San Diego, according to Prometheus Radio Project (a non-profit assisting start-up radio stations), an application window for up to four NCE Low Power FM licenses may be open for non-profits as early as next summer! Prometheus is calling on radio activists to organize. Let's not be on the late-train, the time to get together is now. Application process...radio station... why would folks get together? ! Content cooperation--ASD's radio project is non-commercial, and, are you ready for an entirely different paradigm: permission-based, royalty-free, copyleft, creative commons content. Come to Media Arts August 29th, “a digital gym” where they “hang out, make media, and learn new things.” You will hear about outreach through music and culture with Makeda Dread of the World Beat Center; Art Neill of New Media Rights will reveal the wonders of the exploding popularity of the creative commons and this opportunity in history to be a part of it; Brian Myers will talk about Open Media City Heights, a neighborhood-based web streaming radio station; and don't forget the fire and brimstone we expect to hear from Ian at the Prometheus Radio Project on the inherently amazing essence of terrestrial radio. Come, be inspired, make connections, organize for your own Low Power FM radio dream application team, be a part of ASD's radio in development, and network for the content sharing that will make us all stronger! Hope to see you there!! Kelly Barnes Radio General Manager, ASD Activist San Diego has many volunteer and internship opportunities.
