[SDCPJ] 2012 Right Livelihood Awards: The "Alternative" Nobel Prize

The 2012 Laureates define essential conditions for global peace and security

This year's group of four Laureates highlights the essential conditions for global peace and security: effective nonviolent resistance, a recognition that the arms industry is part of the problem, human and women's rights, and the preservation of our precious ecological resources.

The Jury recognized GENE SHARP (USA) "for developing and articulating the core principles and strategies of nonviolent resistance and supporting their practical implementation in conflict areas around the world". The Peace Resource Center of San Diego and Progressive North County recently showed the film  "How to Start a Revolution," which outlines Sharp's contribution to helping peoples' movements around the world.

[SDCPJ] Re-send: ALL OUT for Nuclear Regulatory Commission meeting on San Onofre 10/9/12!

Some of you reported problems reading this message the first time I sent it out.  Let's see how this one goes.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has scheduled a Public Meeting for Tuesday, October 9, 2012, from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the St. Regis Monarch Bay Hotel in Dana Point (1 Monarch Beach Resort, Dana Point 92629). We need another HUGE turnout for this meeting. Plan to arrive EARLY to get best seats in what we expect to be another overflow  crowd.

NOTE: On-site parking will be $5 Self-Park and $10 Valet. Carpooling is encouraged,  We are using a Facebook Event Page to connect with fellow carpoolers from your location (https://www.facebook.com/events/332048410225364/.   SEE END OF THIS DESCRIPTION for PUBLIC TRANSIT OPTION.

This will be the first time that local concerned citizens, the NRC and Southern California Edison will take part together in a roundable discussion about San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) issues. They will also be joined at the discussion table by representatives from the California Energy Commission, the Coastal Commission and the California Public Utilities Commission.

This historic meeting will have two parts. The first part will be a roundtable discussion about SONGS steam generator problems. Part two will be a general discussion about procedures of the NRC and their effectiveness. The NRC has promised community organizers that questions from the public will be taken throughout the meeting.

"Generators 2 and 3 have been shut down since late January for safety issues. We welcome this opportunity to sit down with the NRC, Southern Calfiornia Edison and other interested parties," said Gene Stone, a resident of San Clemente and head of Residents Organized for a Safe Environment. "Restarting San Onofre would pose a grave and dangerous threat to the eight-and-a-half million citizens who live nearby and their voices need to be heard loudly and clearly. We call on all interested citizens to come to this meeting and express their concerns about San Onofre."

[SDCPJ] Desmond Tutu Does It Again

This speaks for itself:

Earlier this last week, Archbishop Desmond Tutu declined to participate alongside former Prime Minister Tony Blair in a world summit (held on Thursday). The Nobel Peace Laureate refused to share the platform due to Blair's support for the 2003 war on Iraq.

In a statement, Dr Tutu's Office said: "Ultimately, the archbishop is of the view that Mr. Blair's decision to support the United States' military invasion of Iraq, on the basis of unproven allegations of the existence in Iraq of weapons of mass destruction, was morally indefensible.  The 'Discovery Invest Leadership Summit' has leadership as its theme. Morality and leadership are indivisible.  In this context, it would be inappropriate and untenable for the archbishop to share a platform with Mr. Blair."

Then on Sunday, Tutu issued a call that Blair and George W. Bush should be taken to the International Criminal Court in The Hague over the Iraq war.  Writing in the UK's Observer newspaper, he accused the former leaders of lying about weapons of mass destruction.  The Iraq military campaign had made the world more unstable "than any other conflict in history", he said.  The former Archbishop of Cape Town said the US- and UK-led action launched against Saddam's regime in 2003 had brought about conditions for the civil war in Syria and a possible Middle East conflict involving Iran.
"The then leaders of the United States [Mr. Bush] and Great Britain [Mr. Blair] fabricated the grounds to behave like playground bullies and drive us further apart. They have driven us to the edge of a precipice where we now stand - with the spectre of Syria and Iran before us," he said.  He added: "The question is not whether Saddam Hussein was good or bad or how many of his people he massacred. The point is that Mr. Bush and Mr. Blair should not have allowed themselves to stoop to his immoral level."

[SDCPJ] EQUALITY NINE VICTORY CELEBRATION! TOMORROW!

Sean Bohac
www.samealliance.com
(619) 218-3192

The two year battle with City Attorney ends in a victory for nine San Diego marriage equality activists known as the 'Equality 9'. Victory party is planned for Friday night Sept 21st. Public is welcome. Press release attached and inline below.
-----------------------------------

"EQUALITY NINE VICTORY CELEBRATION" AT BAMBOO LOUNGE IN HILLCREST SEPTEMBER 21
Press Contact - Mark Gabrish Conlan
San Diego Alliance for Marriage Equality (S.A.M.E.)
(619) 688-1886

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Alliance for Marriage Equality (S.A.M.E.) is presenting the "Equality Nine Victory Celebration" Friday, September 21, 7 to 9 p.m., at the Bamboo Lounge, 1475 University Avenue in Hillcrest. The event will feature a program celebrating LGBT activism past, present and future; a repeat of the popular "Radical Queer Bingo" game played at the Pride party hosted by S.A.M.E. and Canvass for a Cause July 21; a social mixer and a chance to relax and have fun.
The event will be a combination program, party and celebration of the recent decision by the San Diego city attorney to drop charges against six of the nine marriage equality protesters who had been arrested at the San Diego County Administrative Center August 19. 2010, when couples who had appointments to get married today were barred from the county clerk's office and a squad of sheriff's deputies in riot gear were called to clear them from the hallway.
Nine people were arrested that day and three agreed to plea bargains, but the six who stood up for their rights throughout the process — Michael Anderson, Brian Baumgardner, Sean Bohac, Zakiya Khabir, Chuck Stemke and Cecile Veillard — had legal charges hanging over their heads for over two years until city attorney Jan Goldsmith moved with the court to drop the charges on August 24. A previous attempt to bring the six defendants to trial in April ended embarrassingly for the city attorney when the judge caught the prosecution systematically excluding LGBT people from the jury in violation of California law.
The "Past, Present and Future" program will consist of:
Past: Leo Laurence and Pat Brown of the Committee on Homosexual Freedom (CHF), founded in San Francisco in early 1969 — before the Stonewall Inn riots in New York City commonly believed to be the start of the LGBT rights movement — and the first U.S. group to organize a picket against a private employer for discriminating against LGBT people.
Present: Members of the Equality Nine and their attorneys will talk about the case, and an attorney will brief the crowd about the ongoing litigation challenging the constitutionality of Proposition 8, the ban on marriage equality narrowly approved by California voters in November 2008.
Future: People at the event will have a chance to speak openly and freely about the next direction S.A.M.E. should take for marriage equality and other battlegrounds in the ongoing campaign to secure complete freedom and equality for LGBT people and build coalitions with other victims of discrimination and oppression in the U.S.
Admission to the "Equality Nine Victory Celebration" will be free. A free-will offering will be solicited, and attendees are encouraged to buy food or drink to support the venue.
Interviews with members of the Equality Nine can be arranged by request. Phone (619) 688-1886 for more information.

"Dictators are never as strong as they tell you they are; People are never as week as they think they are"---Dr. Gene Sharp

"How to Start a Revolution" is the remarkable untold story of Nobel Peace prize nominee Gene Sharp, the world's leading expert on nonviolent revolution. This award-winning feature documentary, from the first-time director Ruaridh Arrow, reveals how Sharp's work has given a new generation of pro-democracy leaders the nonviolent weapons they need to overthrow dictators. It shows how his book,
"From Dictatorship to Democracy," has inspired uprisings from Serbia to Iran and from Egypt to Syria and how his work has spread across the globe in an unstoppable wave of profound democratic change.

The film explores how one man's thinking has contributed to the liberation of millions of oppressed people living under some of the most brutal dictatorships in the world and how his work threatens tyrants and their regimes through civil disobedience and nonviolent direct action.

"How to Start a Revolution" is the story of the power of people to change their world, the modern revolution, and the man behind it all.

[SDCPJ] Fellow whistle-blowers stage event for hero Bradley Manning to pay legal fees

Bradley Manning Support Network

ADVISORY FOR 11:00 AM EDT September 25, 2012

Contact:  Nathan Fuller, 516-578-2628

Fellow whistle-blowers stage event for hero Bradley Manning to pay legal fees

On September 30, whistle-blowers, activists, and journalists will speak out for imprisoned soldier and accused WikiLeaks whistle-blower PFC Bradley Manning at Georgetown University's Law Center. Author Chris Hedges, DOJ whistle-blower Jesselyn Radack, NSA whistle-blower Thomas Drake, retired US Army Colonel and State Department Diplomat turned Iraq War objector Ann Wright, and friend of Manning's David House will explain the importance of whistle-blowing, recount the efforts to bring attention to Bradley's case, and the implications a potential conviction would have on our civil liberties to come.

"Bradley Manning is an American hero facing life in prison for doing the right thing," Jeff Paterson of the Bradley Manning Support Network says. "This event will underscore the unfair prosecution of a courageous young man motivated by nothing more than the desire to do the right thing in the context of a wrong war."

The Bradley Manning Support Network and the Georgetown Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild together present the event, which will run from 5-7:30 PM EST at the Law Center, located at 600 New Jersey Ave NW, Washington DC. Those who can't attend the event are encouraged to watch or listen to the speeches live online at BradleyManning.org.

Bradley Manning is approaching 900 days in prison, and his court martial trial won't begin until at least February 4, 2012. The military charges Bradley with indirectly "aiding the enemy," despite the fact that chat logs attributed to the young private show that he sought to expose war crimes, corporate abuse, and civilian casualties to the American public.

I've copied this draft letter below from the City Manager's report to the Encinitas CC

The Honorable Allison Macfarlane
Chairwoman
U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission
Washington, D.C.  2055-0001

RE:   San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) and public safety concerns

Dear Chairwoman Macfarlane:

The City of Encinitas wishes to express its desire that a complete evaluation and elimination of
any potential risks posed by leakage of nuclear contaminated materials are fully addressed at
the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS).  Encinitas is coastal city located 25
miles south from the SONGS facility.  Any potential incident causing significant radiation
leakage or contamination from the facility would have severe impact on the Southern
California population and potentially cause serious environmental damage.
Recent evaluations of the SONGS facility have identified several issues regarding the design
and operation of mechanical equipment and various operational safety issues have been
identified over the years which are causes for serious concern.  The Southern California area is
in a seismically active area.  The consequences on the Fukushime-Dalichi Nuclear Generating
Station from the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan in March 2011 are sobering
reminders of the vulnerabilities and consequences of facilities in earthquake prone areas.

One of the primary responsibilities of government is public safety and welfare of it citizens.  It
is of the utmost importance that all measures be taken to assure the complete and total safety of
the SONGS facility, both mechanically and operationally, before any consideration is given to
permitting reactivation, up to and including consideration of deactivation of the facility.

[SDCPJ] Happy Voter Registration Day!

Huh? Yes, today, Tuesday Sept. 25th was National Voter Registration Day.

Okay, it's not actually an officially proclaimed holiday or such, but it's an idea that many nonprofits and other organizations supported because voting is a big part of creating an active citizenry.

So what? Well, part of creating a more just society or a "better world" means opening up the avenues for all people to make meaningful contributions to society. In the US, that very much includes the public directly participating in "big" decision-making activities. After all, this is a government "by the people" and, as the familiar quote goes, "the world is run by those who show up." (You can even get a bumper sticker of this from us at the PRC!)

Anyway, don't worry if you didn't know about this registration effort. You can still help. AND more importantly, there is still time to REGISTER! (The deadline is Monday October 22.)

In fact... Californians now can register ONLINE! (just launched last week)
The direct link is https://rtv.sos.ca.gov/elections/register-to-vote/
The FAQ (questions) page is http://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/elections_faq.htm

So, tell your friends. Re-register if you moved. And be involved!

Thanks for supporting democracy and the right to participate,

Mariah Gayler
Executive Director

P.S. If you're wondering... YES, it is 100% legal for all 501(c)3 organizations to do voter registration drives and other nonpartisan election-related activities. In fact, "the right of nonprofits to make their voices heard in the policy-making process is rooted in the U.S. Constitution" (from p.19 of "The Lobbying Strategy Handbook" by Pat Libby). So, PLEASE do spread the word about registering to vote, and definitely contact us if you're interested in participatory democracy!

[SDCPJ] American and British Veterans to coordinate International Anti-Drone Demonstrations outside of General Atomics facilities in Poway, CA and London, England

  NEWS ADVISORY:
San Diego Veterans For Peace and Veterans For Peace-United Kingdom will be coordinating two anti-drone demonstrations outside facilities of General Atomics in both London, England and Poway, CA on Thursday, September 27th, informing the public about the current and expanding use of drones throughout the world.
Who:   Veteran and associate members of the San Diego Veterans For Peace and Veterans For Peace-United Kingdom, associates and supporters
When:  Thursday, September 27th from 4-6 PM (both London and San Diego time zones)
Where:  Corner of Scripps Poway Parkway and General Atomics Way, Poway, CA and outside the General Atomics facility in London, England
What:    As part of an international anti-drone effort,  members of the San Diego Veterans For Peace and the Veterans For Peace-United Kingdom will be conducting coordinated international demonstrations outside General Atomics facilities in both Poway, CA and London, England, against the expanding unsupervised use of drones throughout the world.  These two groups, consisting of veteran and associate members from the armed forces of the United States and Great Britain, will be demonstrating and educating the public concerning the current and expanding use use of the Predator Drone throughout the skies of the world.  Law abiding citizens, meeting to conduct business or political affairs in many countries, are being recorded and documented by government and local officials for unknown purposes. The Predator Drone, manufactured by General Atomics, with offices in Poway, CA and London, England,  makes continuing war an easy choice, thus keeping America and the world embroiled in current and future wars of choice.
Why:  The San Diego Veterans For Peace and the Veterans For Peace-United Kingdom are two chapters of a 501-C-3 veterans educational organization that works to increase public awareness of the overall costs of war and to restrain our government from intervening, overtly or covertly, in the affairs of other nations.  The public is always invited to join us.
Additional information concerning this week's coordinated international demonstrations may be obtained from Dave Patterson, 760-207-9139, or dpatterson998@yahoo.com.
