Date: Wed, 3 Oct 2012 14:44:25 -0700
NEWS ADVISORY
The San Diego Veterans For Peace will be displaying the "Hometown Arlington West Memorial" to the fallen 278 service personnel from the Southern California area on Sunday, October 7th, from 8 AM until 4 PM as part of the day of recognition of the 11th anniversary of the start of the Afghanistan War.
Who: Veteran and associate members of the San Diego Veterans For Peace (Chapter #91 – Hugh Thompson Memorial Chapter)
What: Display of the "Hometown Arlington West Memorial" to the 278 fallen service men and service women whose home of record was in San Diego, Imperial, Orange, or Los Angeles counties.
When: Sunday, October 7th, 2012 from 8 AM until 4 PM
Where: Front lawn of the USS Midway Museum, 910 North Harbor Drive (near Broadway), San Diego, CA
Why: Sunday, October 7th, 2012, marks the 11th anniversary of the start of the longest war in American history, the war in Afghanistan. Chapter members of the San Diego Veterans For Peace, from all five military services, will be out early in the morning setting up 278 headstones and 278 flags honoring the fallen service men and service women who have died in either the Iraq or Afghanistan wars to date, hoping that by doing so we will continue to educate the public to the overall cost of these wars and all wars. As veteran suicides now exceed the numbers being killed in the Afghanistan war, we will be adding an additional 20 black unnamed headstones throughout the display representing those veterans who have taken their own lives, often due to what they have experienced in these wars.
