Back-to-school Kit for Counter-recruitment and School Demilitarization Organizing

A new up-to-date kit of materials has been assembled for activists working to demilitarize our educational system and counter military recruiters in high schools.

Assembled by the National Network Opposing the Militarization of Youth (NNOMY), the kit contains a catalog of key brochures, flyers and videos that can be used to educate young people about the realities of military enlistment and war and offer them career and educational alternatives. It also contains useful information for school personnel and organizers. Items in the catalog have recently updated content and are accompanied by links to Web sites where they can be viewed, downloaded and/or ordered in bulk.

The film will be introduced by Zahi Damuni, Co-Founder: AL-Awda, The Palestine Right to Return Coalition. Mr. Damuni will also lead a discussion and question/answer session at the end of the film. We will also be joined by special guest Darcy Ike, who has been to Bil'in as a member of a Witness delegation and will share his experiences there. 

The Peace Resource Center of San Diego is pleased to present "5 Broken Cameras," the first Palestinian film to ever be nominated for best Documentary Feature. Produced by y A.M.P.A.S®, the critically-acclaimed 5 BROKEN CAMERAS is a deeply personal, first-hand account of life and non-violent resistance in Bil'in, a West Bank village surrounded by illegal Israeli settlements. 

Shot by Palestinian farmer Emad Burnat, who bought his first camera in 2005 to record the birth of his youngest son, Gibreel, the film was co-directed by Burnat and Guy Davidi, an Israeli filmmaker. Structured in chapters around the destruction of each one of Burnat's cameras, the filmmakers' collaboration follows one family's evolution over five years of village upheaval. 

As the years pass in front of the camera, we witness Gibreel grow from a newborn baby into a young boy who observes the world unfolding around him with the astute powers of perception that only children possess. Burnat watches from behind the lens as olive trees are bulldozed, protests intensify and lives are lost in this cinematic diary and unparalleled record of life in the West Bank. 5 BROKEN CAMERAS is a A Kino Lorber Release.

(please forward widely)   NO U.S. WAR ON SYRIA!  TAKE ACTION NOW AND ORGANIZE EMERGENCY RESPONSE IF THERE IS AN ATTACK and organize actions before an attack USS Dwight Eisenhower off the coast of Syria Secretary of State Kerry's demagogic speech on August 26 on the situation in Syria makes it clear that the U.S. is serious about military action against the people of Syria.  Polls show that the overwhelming majority of Americans are against any further intervention.  However, as with the Iraq War, the government shows contempt and disregard for the will of the people. UNAC calls for all antiwar and social justice organizations to prepare for a response if there is any military action by the U.S. in Syria.  We call upon all organizations to mobilize to take action opposing U.S. intervention before any military action.  We also call upon all organizations to work together and make plans for an emergency response on the day after any military action against Syria.  If your organization is making such plans, please click here and fill out the form so we can let others know. The issue of chemical weapons is the cover the U.S. and its allies use to justify their illegal and immoral acts of war, just as the specter of WMD's were used as the rationale for attacking Iraq.  Their real mission, as in Iraq, Libya, and elsewhere, is to force regime change in order to control energy resources and get compliant regimes in the region.  The claim that a bloody military attack on a country that poses no threat to the U.S. is needed to offer humanitarian assistance is the height of hypocrisy.  The result of the "humanitarian" invasion and ten-year occupation of Iraq is over a million Iraqi deaths and a country in ruin. Military intervention will not bring peace to a people already engulfed in terrible violence and destruction.  Such intervention can only lead to more death and devastation. We must do all we can to stay the hand of the U.S. government as it moves towards military intervention in Syria.  Please start organizing now for actions to oppose U.S. intervention in Syria. Say NO to another US War! Attack Syria?  NO

 

The San Diego Coalition for Peace & Justice (www.sdcpj.org) opposes United States military intervention or involvement in Syria.  Here's why: 

 

The U.S. problem with Syria is not Syria, it is the U.S.

 

U.S. military interventions around the world, notably in the Americas and the Middle East, have always been rationalized by humanitarian arguments. But inevitably and almost universally, these interventions have actually been motivated by dreams of global power and war profiteering. 

 

The reality of U.S. military interventions, beyond abhorrent profits by corporate war contractors and munitions vendors, has been failure of humanitarian objectives; and worse outcomes for the citizens of the invaded nations including the cost of countless human lives.  The "positive" outcome of war profiteering has been at the cost of the U.S. taxpayer. 

 

The United States, thanks to the military adventurism of the last decade-plus, has had its reputation reinforced as hated invader and occupier.  This includes the effect of the global drone wars.  Any U.S. military intervention in Syria will not only not resolve that nation's internal divisions – it will, as our military invasions have done, make things worse.  Worse for the Syrians – and worse for the U.S.  And again, who will profit? 

 

The San Diego Coalition for Peace & Justice opposes any U.S. military direct or indirect entrance into the Syrian conflict.  Our national experience shows that war breeds war, and death breeds death. U.S. military adventurism breeds both, and a deepened earned hatred of the U.S.  No good can come of this.

Tuesday August 6, 2013 marks the 68th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima by the United States.

Join the Peace Resource Center as we fold paper peace cranes and give them to people visiting Balboa Park. Look for the blue banner "Hiroshima / Nagasaki - Never Again" near the fountain between the Natural History Museum and the Rueben H. Fleet Space Center. Both these museums are free on that Tuesday and there will be many people to have conversations with about nonviolent alternatives to resolve international conflict.

We will be there from 10am until 2pm. Come for as little or as long as you like. Experience folding paper cranes is not required. Bring along some gently used paper to recycle into cranes.

Adopting a traditional Japanese ceremony tōrō nagashi (tōrō means "lantern" and nagashi means "cruise, flow"), we celebrate peace and humanity by floating paper lanterns with written messages to the world as a hope or WISH for global peace and well-being. We invite guests to write messages on paper lanterns and enjoy a relaxing San Diego evening at the waterside Coronado City Council Chambers patio along with light food, refreshments, origami, exhibits, presentations, and live music – a wonderful experience to gather and celebrate with fellow community members and leaders. You can make and float your very own paper lantern (materials will be supplied for free) and you're welcome to take it home with you at the end of the evening. Yukata are welcome!

Ten Ways to Reduce the Threat of Terrorist Attacks on Americans

This 10-point plan would significantly reduce terrorist threats, save taxpayers billions of dollars and make Americans more loved and admired in the world. After a decade of wielding the military stick, it's time for some carrots.

1. Declare a moratorium on drone strikes: The head of Al-Qaeda, Ayman al-Zawahiri, is calling on jihadists to retaliate for US drone strikes in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Yemen. The Yemeni group Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), where the US says the threats are emanating from, is also calling for retaliation for drones strikes (there have been four strikes in Yemen since July 28). Drone strikes have become the number one recruiting tool for extremists. By grounding the drones, we will stop creating new enemies faster than we can kill them.

2. Close the US drone base in Saudi Arabia. One of the reasons Osama bin Laden said he hated the United States was that the US had military bases in the Holy Lands in Saudi Arabia. President Bush quietly closed those bases in 2003 but in 2010 President Obama secretly reopened a base there for launching drones into Yemen. It's a national security threat ripe for blowback. So are many of the over 800 US bases peppered all over the world. We can save billions of taxpayer dollars, and make ourselves safer, by closing them.

3. Free the 86 Guantanamo prisoners cleared for release. The US treatment of Guantanamo prisoners, holding people indefinitely without charges or trials and brutally force-feeding the hunger strikers, is an affront to people throughout the Muslim world and a blatant hypocrisy of our American values. Of the 166 prisoners left in Guantanamo, 86 have been cleared for release, meaning the US government has determined they represent no threat to our nation. President Obama can use the waiver system, certifying to Congress that it is in the US national interest to release them. He just did this, for the first time, for two Algerian prisoners. He should do this for all 86 cleared prisoners, then bring the remaining prisoners to the US for trials.

4. Apologize and compensate innocent victims. There is a perception in the Muslim world that the US government does not value their lives. Airstrikes have killed many innocent people and only in the cases of Afghanistan and Iraq has there been a way, albeit woefully inadequate, for aggrieved families to seek redress. The US should agree to apologize and compensate the families of innocent people who have been killed or maimed by the US armed forces or CIA.

5. Go for the "zero option" in Afghanistan: withdraw all US troops. The 11-year US occupation of Afghanistan has provided fodder for the Taliban in both Afghanistan and Pakistan, while propping up an unpopular and corrupt regime in Kabul. And if the US troops were not in Afghanistan, the Taliban would not be trying to cross the Pakistani border to kill US soldiers. President Obama promised to end the US occupation by the end of 2014, but is now weighing options for keeping thousands of troops  and military contractors behind. Bad idea.

6. Sit down and talk. The Taliban opened an office in Qatar in June to finally start long-delayed talks with the US. But due to President Karzai's objections, the talks were nixed. It's long past the time to talk to the Taliban, and then move on to talk to those elements in Al Qaeda who are more rational and open to negotiations. If you look at the Rand Corporation's study of the demise of 268 terrorist groups, 43% dissolved by joining the political process, 40% from  better policing, and only 7% through military action. We've been using military action for over a decade; it's time for another approach.

7. Stop supporting dictatorships and repressive militaries. The US recently signed the largest arms deal in history with the monarchy of Saudi Arabia, the same government that rolled its tanks into neighboring Bahrain to crush the democratic uprising there. In Egypt, US weapons and tear gas were used for decades against peaceful demonstrators, and continue to be used against peaceful protesters supporting ousted Muslim Brotherhood. While weapons sales to undemocratic and/or unstable regimes might be good for US weapons manufacturers, they are bad for the reputation and security of the American people.

8. Support non-violent democracy movements. Terrorists thrive best where there is chaos and instability. Nurturing democratic institutions and non-violent civil society are key to thwarting the growth of extremist movements. The US needs to do more than support these efforts; it also needs to listen to them. In Yemen, the US is helping to fund the 6-month experiment in democracy called the National Dialogue Conference, where 565 extremely diverse members of society are meeting daily to map out the nation's future. The Conference recently passed, by overwhelming vote, a resolution declaring drones strikes and all extrajudicial killing illegal. Unfortunately, the US has refused to abide by the popular will thus far.

9. Adhere to the international rule of law. In its war on terror, the US has been killing terror suspects with blatant disregard for international law and national sovereignty. A July 18 Pew poll of 39 nations found fierce global opposition to US drone strikes, particularly in the Muslim world. If the US wants help and sympathy in rooting out would-be attackers, it has to show the world it will stop using extrajudicial assassinations and start adhering to international law.  

10. Spend foreign aid money on education, healthcare and lifting people out of poverty. For a fraction of the money we keep wasting each month on the failed war in Afghanistan or supporting the already wealthy Israeli military, we could be building schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan, helping Yemenis find a solution to their water shortages, and providing humanitarian aid to Syrian refugees. We'll make a lot more friends building clinics, wells, electrical grids and schools than vaporizing people with Hellfire missiles.
