San Diego Tour of Heroic Afghan Malalai Joya
Ending her tour of the United States, Malalai Joya, former Afghan representative to that nation's constitutional assembly and its first parliament, will be at five San Diego venues from October 21 – 23 to speak to her nation's recent history and possible future. At these sessions San Diego has an extraordinary opportunity to speak with and ask questions of one of the most exceptional women of the world to come out of the last decade. Media interviews may be arranged.
Now 34 years old, Ms. Joya served as an elected delegate to the Loya Jirga that convened on the Constitution of Afghanistan, and became one of 68 women elected to the 249-seat National Assembly, or Wolesi Jirga, as the youngest member of that Afghan parliament. In 2003 and again in 2007 she spoke out against former warlords and war criminals in the Afghan parliament, and because of this stance was suspended from the parliament. Since then she has survived six assassination attempts. She travels in Afghanistan with armed guards and has worked tirelessly on behalf of Afghan women and to end the occupation of her country.
In 2010, Time Magazine placed Malalai Joya on their annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world. Foreign Policy Magazine listed her in its annual list of the Top 100 Global Thinkers. In March, 2011, The Guardian listed her among the "Top 100 women activists and campaigners." Her most recent book, A Woman Among Warlords: The Extraordinary Story of an Afghan Who Dared to Raise Her Voice, was published by Scribner in the U.S.
"We need the support of justice-loving people of the U.S. to join their hands with us," Joya says. "Unfortunately, we see that today imperialism and fundamentalism have joined hands."
Ms. Joya will visit five venues in the San Diego region per the detailed schedule below, ending on October 23 at 7 PM at the Church of the Brethren, sponsored by the San Diego Coalition for Peace & Justice.
Ms. Joya's tour is sponsored nationally by the United National Antiwar Coalition (UNAC) and the Afghan Women's Mission, and in San Diego by the San Diego Coalition for Peace & Justice and the Peace Resource Center.
