[SDCPJ] Another (6th!) attempt to require draft registration for a CA drivers license

AB 2201 was introduced on 2/20/14. It would force young men to register for a possible future draft as a condition for being licensed to drive in the state of California. This is the 6th attempt by Selective Service to increase California's low draft registration rate. Five previous bills were all blocked in the legislature.

Like AB 251 in 2011, this bill would automatically register a drivers license applicant. There would be no way to opt out. Only males would be affected because the Selective Service law still discriminates, even though the armed forces have opened combat jobs to women.

The bill would use Dept. of Motor Vehicle funds to revise and reprint all drivers license forms and forward applicants' information to SS digitally. The legislative analyst who submitted a report on the 2011 noted that using DMV revenue for this purpose could be challenged legally because the CA constitution limits the use of such funds to paying for transportation-related expenses and the mitigation of the environmental effects of motor vehicle operation.

As of Feb. 25, the bill had not been assigned to any specific committees but may have its first hearing March 23.

For who believe we need a draft, please read: http://www.comdsd.org/article_archive/BelieveDraft.htm

For more information, contact Committee Opposed to Militarism and the Draft, comdsd@aol.com, 760-753-7518.

It s the dirty little secret of the War on Terror: all bets are off, and almost anything goes. We have fundamentally changed the rules of the game and the rules of engagement. Today drone strikes, night raids, and U.S. government condoned torture occur in corners across the globe, generating unprecedented civilian casualties. Investigative reporter Jeremy Scahill (author of Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Mercenary Army) traces the rise of the Joint Special Operations Command, the most secret fighting force in U.S. history, exposing operations carried out by men who do not exist on paper and will never appear before Congress. No target is off-limits for the JSOC kill list, not even U.S. citizens. Director Richard Rowley and whistle-blower Scahill s DIRTY WARS is a chilling battle cry for the soul and conscience of an America few of us know exists.

Day of Decision Rally to Defend Trans* Rights!

Monday, February 24th

6th Ave & University Ave ~ Hillcrest
Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1462625570618746/?source=1

On Monday February 24, we will learn whether or not Californians will vote on a historic law guaranteeing transgender students equal access to school facilities and activities that match their gender identity. WHETHER THE OPPOSITION QUALIFIES FOR THE BALLOT OR NOT, WE WILL RALLY TO DEFEND TRANS* RIGHTS!

WHY WE RALLY

Transgender students moved one step closer to justice with the passing of the School Success and Opportunity Act (AB 1266) this year. This brand new California bill guarantees transgender students safe access to necessary school facilities & activities in public schools. As you may know, this bill and these students are under attack by national transphobic organizations. Since the fall of 2013, they have been running a media smear campaign against trans* youth and lying to the public to get this issue on the ballot.

EVENT INFO

Hear speakers from the trans* community (this event will highlight trans* voices only). Bring signs! Wear pink, blue or white in solidarity with the trans* community. DEPENDING ON THE OUTCOME, WE MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE A MARCH. More details to be announced soon. ***IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN SPEAKING, PLEASE EMAIL CFACFIELD@GMAIL.COM***

[SDCPJ] OLB San Diego - Upcoming Actions

Overpass Light Brigade has a number of actions coming up, starting on Monday, Feb 24th, from 5:30 to 7 in Hillcrest with a trans* rights rally by Canvass for a Cause at Sixth and University following the announcement of the status of a transphobic referendum initiative to repeal a new law signed into law by the governor, Assembly Bill 1266, protecting rights to ensure that transgender public school students are able to participate in sports and other activities and use school facilities based on their gender identity.  If enough signatures were submitted, Californians would vote on the referendum in November.

The following evening, Feb 25th from 7 to 8:30 PM, there will be a candlelight vigil by GMO-Free Orange County with a light brigade message "OMG GMO GMA = EVIL" to help provide a welcoming committee for the powerful Grocery Manufacturers Association arrival at the Laguna Niguel Ritz-Carlton hotel and to let them know that it is NOT OK for them to dictate what's in OUR food supply, on Pacific Coast Highway and Ritz Carlton Drive, at their arrival at a conference put on by high powered attorneys focusing on:

- Introducing a watered down GMO labeling bill on the federal level

- Laws to thwart States from implementing GMO labeling, bring law suits against communities and/or states that have implemented GMO label laws or created GMO Free zones

- Thwarting laws and class action suits pertaining to food safety which includes laws regarding food dyes, nano technology and the new controversial "green" in plant agent orange pesticides 2-4D to name a few.

Then on Friday, Feb 25th, OLB will have a "CAPTIVITY KILLS" Light Brigade on the Clairemont Drive overpass of I-5 from 7 to 8:30 PM to keep pressure on Sea World and other marine parks to end captivity.

Looking ahead to May, so far two actions are being planned:

- DroneDiego anti-drone days which will tentatively be from Thursday, May 15 through Sunday, May 18th.

- March Against Monsanto Light Brigade…on the weekend of the MAM, the rally and march is on Saturday, May 24th.

If you'd like occasional updates from time to time on upcoming actions, be sure to subscribe to our Mailing List, and check your junk or spam folder for the confirmation email.

Those of you have never seen "light brigade", it consists of large lighted letters to make up a message, each letter held by a different person.  Examples are on our website.

You are what make OLB happen!  By holding a letter you have a personal connection between yourself and the message and the struggle!  We sincerely appreciate your participation and welcome you to come back!  Thank you, each and every Holder of the Light!

 Peace…Chris

[SDCPJ] Queers and Allies Unite! A Benefit of Rockin' Resistance Against Police Brutality

Queers and Allies Unite!
A Benefit of Rockin' Resistance Against Police Brutality

Sunday, February 23
9:00pm-Midnight
@ The Kava Lounge
2812 Kettner Blvd., San Diego, California 92102
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/1407259376191284/

Join local queers & allies for a night of rockin' resistance against police brutality! This night will be full of resistance music, speakers from the community, a raffle and interactive game.

***THIS EVENT IS 21+***

This purpose of this benefit is to raise awareness of police brutality in the broader LGBTQ community and raise funds for legal fees for James Messer. James is an activist with Canvass For a Cause who was assaulted by a San Diego Sheriff's officer back in September while canvassing for LGBTQ rights in North County San Diego. This assault and discrimination was based upon James' perceived sexual orientation by the officer. This officer abused his authority and displayed homophobic behavior during this encounter in addition to physically assaulting and belittling James. The funds raised from this event will go toward filing fees to ensure that this officer is held accountable for his unacceptable behavior.

Lets face it. San Diego is a heavily militarized town. From drone manufacturing to one of the largest marine bases and an economy dependent on contractor jobs comes a more conservative gay community that generally thinks of law enforcement as our friends and our protectors. This is far from the truth. Police brutality in the LGBTQ community happens often and is often unreported, especially when it comes to houseless communities, queer sex workers, gender variant people and black and brown trans* womyn.

THAT'S WHY WE WILL UNITE TO FIGHT BRUTALITY!

SUGGESTED DONATION: $10
NO ONE WILL BE TURNED AWAY FOR LACK OF FUNDS

All funds beyond personal damages will be donated to relevant projects and local coalitions that pertain to police brutality in the queer community.

**About the Bands**

Candy Warpop is a nihilistic storm of art punk and dark psychedelia. Incubated under the debauched neon of Las Vegas, this audacious quartet (Amy Pate on Vocals/Guitar :: Anisa Marie on Drums :: Joshua Chévere Cohen on Guitar :: Jonas Woolverton on Bass) is unrestrained by conventional musical standards. The raw flow of eccentric creation and kaleidoscopic illustration creates a sonic balancing act on the razor's edge between beauty and destruction, euphony and dissonance, love and chaos.

The Social Animal is a provocative indie rock band known for its candidly intimate and soulfully charged lyrics, searing guitar solos and funky pop rock rhythms. Formed in San Diego in 2012, the band is dedicated to providing not only an electrifying live show, but also works to inspire their fans to engage in community-based activism and philanthropy.

Pale Antique is Baroque Pop/Ambient/Experimental music performed solo by Joshua Chévere Cohen.

[SDCPJ] Phonebank to Support Transgender Youth!

Wednesday, February 19th ~ 5:30-7:30pm
Planned Parenthood: First Avenue Specialty Services Michelle Wagner Center
2017 First Avenue Suite 100, San Diego, California 92101
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/552720844835072/

Join our volunteer activist network as we educate California voters about the School Success & Opportunity Act (AB 1266), the first bill in the country to guarantee trans* students equal access to public school bathrooms, locker rooms, sports teams and all other sex-segregated facilities and activities that match their gender identity!

Since the fall of 2013, transphobic organizations like the Pacific Justice Institute and the National Organization for Marriage have been running a media smear campaign against trans* youth and lying to the public to get this issue on the ballot and remove these protections so long denied to trans* folk.

***THIS IS THE LAST PHONEBANK BEFORE THE FEBRUARY 24th DAY OF DECISION. WE WILL FIND OUT IF THIS ISSUE WILL BE ON THE NOVEMBER BALLOT ON FEB 24th***
Day of Decision: https://www.facebook.com/events/1462625570618746/

In preparation for a possible vote in November, we are hosting these phone banks to help reach the public before the onslaught of expected anti-trans* media hits the airwaves and our TV screens. We know with our experience working on the FAIR Education Act that it is imperative to reach the public before any doubts are put into their heads. Right now, we are still at a place where many people do not know about this bill or this issue. We cannot wait until the fall to reach voters if we want to win! In order to reach as many people as possible, we need your help!!

This event will include:
- gender 101 training & phonebank training
- a debrief on our experiences
- free snacks & drinks
- working with other volunteers to protect trans* youth!

Have questions or want to host an event in coordination at your school or organization? Please contact field@canvassforacause.org!

Nonviolent Peacekeeper Training

Saturday, February 15, 2014 9-11:30 a.m.
Peace Resource Center of San Diego
3850 Westgate Place, San Diego, CA 92105

The Peace Resource Center will hold a training for those who would like to help at demonstrations and other activities. The training will include techniques, tasks, practical roleplays and more.

The role of peacekeepers is to promote the goals of the event as stated by the event officials and
their literature, and to maintain the safety of all involved.  Peacekeepers act as a communications network, help set the tone of the action, mediate between participants and counter-protestors when needed, and more.

We need peacekeepers specifically to help at a 350.org activity coming up soon.  However, the skills are useful for any public activity and we need trained volunteers willing to be on call as needed. If you'd like to be a part of "Growing" our pool of trained peacekeepers who can help other groups at their demonstrations and activities please let us know!  (Note: If you have already been trained and would like to be a part of the peacekeeper group, please let me know.)  Thank you!

Please RSVP for the training or for more info: carolj@prcsd.org

[SDCPJ] Sad loss; Tanja Winter RIP

Sad news re: Tanja Winter I've been informed by Keta Hodgson that Tanja died today at around 3pm and that the end came swiftly and she seemed to not suffer. A memorial service will be held in San Diego at a date to be determined. I'll post more when I know more.

Conditions have always applied to freedom in America

Terms and conditions have always applied in this country. It has depended on your race, gender, net worth. Yet...many pretend that they do not know this is going on.

[SDCPJ] Mon, Feb 17, 14The Prison-Industrial Complex FORUM at ASD Gen. Meeting;

The Prison-Industrial Complex Forum
Activist San Diego General Meeting

 • Why does the United States incarcerate a higher percentage of its population than any other country in the world?
 • Why are private companies getting into the prison business, and how do they think it’s going to benefit their bottom lines?
 • Why has the U.S. prison system been called the “new Jim Crow”?
 • What is the connection between the expanding U.S. prison population and the “war on drugs”?
 • How do gender-variant people fare in U.S. prisons?
 • Is abolishing the prison system a real possibility?
