Walter
I will never forget the first meeting I had with a mother and her child who was in a wheelchair permanently after being injured by medical negligence. The child had no control over his movements or anything else. He had no ability to speak, but I remember his eyes looking at me and just saying, “Can you help?”
That’s why I made this ad in support of Proposition 46.
The shocking truth is that the mother I met two decades ago is one of thousands. Right now, 200,000 to 400,000 people die every year in America from medical errors. Medical errors are a major public health crisis and Proposition 46 is a critical reform which will prevent medical negligence with three simple provisions.
First, Proposition 46 corrects an injustice created in 1975 when damages resulting from medical malpractice were limited to $250,000, even in the case of permanent injury or death. Prop 46 simply adjusts the cap for inflation to create accountability and provide justice for families who have suffered at the hands of irresponsible physicians.
Second, Proposition 46 puts in place a random drug testing system, similar to what is used for bus drivers and airline pilots, to ensure that physicians aren't under the influence when lives are at stake. Testing will make sure an impaired doctor doesn’t harm someone you love.
Finally, Proposition 46 will require doctors to look at a patient’s drug history before prescribing narcotics, to prevent harm from over prescribing and the growing epidemic of prescription drug abuse.
It’s too late to help the children in this ad, but we can prevent any other family from suffering the same tragedy.
The insurance companies spending tens of millions to oppose Proposition 46 only think about their bottom line. The rest of us think the lives of families are more important. Please watch the ad, share it with the people you love, and join me in November to vote Yes on Proposition 46.
Thank you,
