Subject: NEWS ADVISORY: San Diego Veterans For Peace to set up "Hometown Arlington West" at the USS Midway Lawn on November 11th (Veterans Day)
NEWS ADVISORYFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASESan Diego Veterans For Peace to set up "Hometown Arlington West" on Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11th, from 8 AM until dark on the grassy lawn of the USS Midway MuseumWho: Veteran and associate members of the San Diego chapter of Veterans For Peace (Chapter #91)When: Veterans Day, November 11th, from 8 AM until darkWhere: Grassy lawn in front of the USS Midway Museum, 910 N. Harbor Drive, San Diego, CA 92101What: This display, modeled after the Arlington National Cemetery, is of approximately 300 headstones, each representing a fallen serviceman or servicewoman from Southern California, who died in the Iraq or Afghanistan wars since 2001. Each headstone has the service person's name, local hometown, and date of death, and includes those fallen from San Diego County, Imperial County, Orange County, and Los Angeles County. Solid black headstones will be found among the white headstones, representing the many more servicemen and servicewomen who have taken their own lives as a result of their involvement in these wars. The public is invited to help us place the 300 headstones beginning at 8 AM, honor them during the day, and to remove them at dark to be stored for future display. Why: Being Veterans Day, it is fitting to honor the fallen from our local area who have given their lives in the service of their country. As Veterans For Peace, with active members of all five military services plus associate members, we believe that it is also important for the general public to stop and honor our fallen brothers and sisters, and to understand that these wars, like all wars, are easy to start and difficult to end, and have had a terrible cost, both in young lives lost and public treasure depleted. For additional information or to obtain an interview, please contact US Army veteran David Barrows, at 619-512-7739, or the below.Submitted by:San Diego Veterans For PeaceChapter #91 (Hugh Thompson Memorial Chapter)Gil FieldDirector for Communications858-342-1964################################################################################################
