Each month the Peace Resource Center is hosting a conversation time to come together to talk about issues in our communities, what we know and can learn, and how we can act to make a better world.

Border Reality Visit

Sun. June 7th, 9:30am to 4pm

A special tour to introduce "the border" and how it impacts the people of our region. 

This visit is planned for supporters and members of the Peace Resource Center, Church of the Brethren, and San Diego Friends Meeting. Our colleagues from AFSC San Diego will be leading us. There will be three stops along the border on the U.S. side and time to talk together at the end with lunch. More information is available in the "Tips and Guidelines" document.

The purpose is to: 

     - Experience how the border & US laws affect families who've been separated 

     - View "the fence" and effects on people and environment

Schedule 

9:30 am – arrive no later than 9:30 at the Peace Campus (3850 Westgate Pl). 

     – We have a 15 passenger van and a few cars lined up to provide transportation. 

10:30 am – 1st Stop, Virginia Street Mall 

10:45 am – 2nd Stop, Water Treatment Plant 

11:00 am – 3rd Stop, Friendship Park 

12 noon – Discussion at the Park, info about the monument 

1:00 pm – worship or garden visit (based on availability)

1:30 pm – Lunch together (food will be provided, requesting $10 donation)

     – Van leaves when we finish 

4 pm? – projected arrival back to campus sometime between 3-4pm

Considerations for the day

     - BRING: plenty of water & U.S. identification (driver's license or CA ID are ok)

     - WEAR: sunscreen, a hat or sun visor, comfortable clothing and walking shoes

     - We will *NOT* travel into Mexico, however U.S. identification is needed to access portions of the border tour. 

     - We expect to be able to drive into the park. However, if we receive any kind of rain between now and then we may have to walk, so walking shoes are advised.

     - We are trying to be as friendly as possible for all ages, but are aware of limitations for young children and people with mobility challenges. Those with children or challenges are invited to consider the schedule and join us for portions that you are able. Contact us with questions.

I watched this video intently on Monday, during Memorial Day.

Eloquent speaker after eloquen speaker came to the podium and I had a lot to take away. Ron Dellums, Pat Shroder, Tom Hayden, Wayne Smith...gave me much to ponder.

My take away: We much challenge all form of injustice. We need a mass movement to counter injustice and to secure peace. Those of us who are more aware than others must work to bring others from niavity to knowledge to movement to change. We cannot segregate our moral or ethical concerns....All Forms of Injustice Must Be Challenged (MLK).

We have suffered the burden of ignorance, the burden of oppression...we do not have to suffer the burden of injustice. Peace, is the absence of War, the presence of justice, the public demonstration of justice and an absence of those conditions that give rise to war.

Please focus on this and share.

I have determined that my position in this is to be a voice for the people. A voice of hope, liberty, love, compassion, empathy...and justice. I am weary of asking for help. I will continue, even if I am the only one trying.

On May 28, 2010, my husband and father of my 5 children was brutally beaten and tortured at the San Diego border by federal agents. Days later Anastasio Hernandez Rojas died. The San Diego coroner's office described Anastasio's death as a homicide and found that he had "several loose teeth; bruising to his chest, stomach, hips, knees, back, lips, head and eyelids; five broken ribs; and a damaged spine."
 
 Border agents killed my husband. My family and I have not been the same ever since. To this day, our children ask, "Why did they kill my daddy?" and I've been fighting to find answers as well. We are still seeking justice since the case still has not been resolved. Were it not for a courageous eye-witness who recorded a video showing a dozen agents beating him while he was handcuffed on the ground, and 36,000 people signing our petition, I'm not sure his case would have ever been investigated.

 Since 2010, the year Anastasio was killed, at least 39 people have died as a result of encounters with Customs and Border Protection officers and many more have suffered serious injuries from such brutal use-of-force.

 Many of these families, like ours, don't get answers and agents are not disciplined for killing mothers or teenage kids as young as 15 - families such as those of  Jose Gutierrez, Valeria Munique Tachiquin and Carlos la Madrid. We've joined together in this fight and as the federal government attempts to discourage us from seeking answers, we grow more determined to struggle. Now, we invite you to stand with us to strengthen the call for justice and accountability in our border communities to stop the brutality.

Please join us in a Day of Action to Stop Border Brutality on May 28, 2015 5 pm at Balboa Park (6th and Laurel St, San Diego), so that the voices of border families can be heard across the country.

The Block Party is an annual event (5th year!) on campus, hosted by the Brethren with support by various community groups and businesses. It is open to all and lots of fun for children (and adults) of all ages with games, face painting, music, cake walk, jump house, hay ride around the garden, and more. Bring a dish to share and meet your fellow community members. 

This year, the PRC will be joining by adding a Kids' Peace Fest with crafts and activities that relate to peace, justice, and sustainability.

Alumni Boycott of UCSD Begins in Support of the C.H.E. Cafe
Donations to Stop Until Eviction Dropped and Lease Restored

LA JOLLA – The annual UCSD Alumni Weekend will be June 4 - 7 this year and features many events for alumni at the campus. They will be greeted with informational leaflets and sign-up sheets to join a boycott of alumni donations to the university.

 

On March 24 a court order for eviction went into effect, to push the C.H.E. Cafe Collective out of its home of 35 years, the C.H.E. Cafe. The Cafe's appeal of the court order is still pending in the appellate court.

 

Following a 5 a.m. Rally to Protect the C.H.E. Cafe attended by over a hundred people, an occupation of the building by students and other supporters was started on March 24. The occupation, or sit-in, has continued for over two months, in defiance of the eviction order. Since the sit-in/occupation of the C.H.E. Cafe began, events and activity at the Cafe have multiplied. Events at the Cafe in recent weeks have included Student Film Nights, UCSD Triton Art, Earth Day Planting Party, Creative Dance Class, Paint the C.H.E. With Mario Torero, Co-op Prom, presentation on activist history at UCSD by Professor Emeritus Fred Lonidier, Meatless Mondays, an ongoing Queer Film Night, and events with the Roger's Community Garden.

 

The UCSD administration has shown no interest in calling off the eviction and Sheriff's Deputies can arrive at any time to try to force people out of the building. With the summer break starting on June 13, the administration and the Sheriff's Department may make their move to finalize the eviction once most students are gone. Although this timing tactic would reduce the size of the student body response, supporters are confident that the general community will turn out to protest.

 

For over a year the UCSD administration has attempted to shut the C.H.E. Cafe Collective out of its historic home using a variety of secretive bureaucratic maneuvers, manipulations, and blatant lies. More than a million dollars is the cost projection the UCSD administration has claimed to need to make the C.H.E. Cafe building "safe" to use. At the request of the C.H.E. Cafe Collective, a reputable licensed general contractor with experience in rehabilitating historic wood structures did a preliminary walk through recently and thought the building was in better shape than what he expected to find.

 

The UCSD administration's claim that the building is "unsafe" because of a lack of automatic fire sprinklers has been thoroughly debunked. The administration has not explained why a lack of fire sprinklers suddenly became a concern after almost 50 years of use of the building by UCSD. The University's commissioned 2010 report on the condition of the building states "addition of full fire suppression is not recommended at this time." Research by alumni revealed that the UC Office of the President (UCOP) abides by the California Fire Code, which states that buildings such as the C.H.E. Cafe are exempt from any requirement to retrofit an automatic fire sprinkler system. Fire extinguishers and all other Fire Code requirements have always been maintained. Other than retrofitting sprinklers, the official UCSD administration assessments of repairs needed include a long list of items like replacement of all the plumbing pipes, despite the fact that no leaks have been found. This is how the cost estimates from the administration end up topping a million dollars.

 

COMMUNITY SUPPORT GROWING
The C.H.E. Cafe continues to be an invaluable "hands-on" laboratory for students and community members to learn the skills needed to run a vegetarian restaurant, concert/events venue and community center. It continues to be a shining light of the "diversity" that the University claims to promote.

 

During the past year, despite the protracted struggle over funding of building maintenance, termination of the lease, the eviction lawsuit and the appeal of that ruling, more than 100 shows and events were held at the Cafe.

 

Organizations and individuals publicly opposed to the eviction of the C.H.E. Cafe Collective from the CHE Cafe building include the University Council-American Federation of Teachers (AFT), the San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council, the UCSD Faculty Association, the University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE), United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 2865 (UCSD teaching assistants and student employees), AFT Local 1931 (faculty and staff in the San Diego Community College and Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College Districts), KSDT Radio, UCSD Mecha, The General Store Co-op, Rabbi Laurie Coskey, Ed.D.(Executive Director, Interfaith Center for Worker Justice), Martin Eder (Interim Director, KNSJ Radio), UAW Local 5810 (Post Doctoral Researchers Union at UCSD) Alor Caleron (Director, San Diego Employee Rights Center), UCSD Co-ops and Collectives Alumni, and many others.

 

More than 14, 000 people have signed online petitions to tell the UCSD administration to stop the eviction of the C.H.E. Cafe Collective, to restore the lease and to fund basic building maintenance costs. ALUMNI ALARM GROWS LOUDER
Over this past year, hundreds of alumni have signed petitions and open letters of protest. Even a past president of the Alumni Association wrote a letter of protest. UCSD Chancellor Pradeep Khosla has refused to meet with concerned alumni to discuss the eviction and building repairs dispute. Now, the C.H.E. Cafe Support Network has decided to call a boycott of alumni donations to pressure the UCSD administration in a language it understands: money.

 

Alumni have donated millions of dollars to UCSD. Thousands of alumni have eaten at or attended shows and meetings and events at the C.H.E. Cafe or enjoyed the low-cost services of one or more of the three other student coops. Hundreds of alumni have actually worked at the C.H.E. Cafe or at the other coops.

 

The boycott demands that Chancellor Khosla:

 

STOP THE EVICTION OF THE C.H.E. CAFE COLLECTIVE FROM THE C.H.E. CAFE FACILITY
RESTORE THE LEASE
RESTORE THE BASIC BUILDING MAINTENANCE FUNDS
STOP THE "BIG LIE" PUBLIC RELATIONS CAMPAIGN TO BRAND THE BUILDING "UNSAFE"
RENEW THE LONG TERM LEASE FOR ALL FOUR OF THE STUDENT COOPS

            As the media and society reflects on 50 years since the start of the Vietnam War and its disastrous effects on the US, its veterans and our political system, it is time to tell our truth:. PEACE IS PRICELESS, WARS ARE ATROCIOUS. It is time to both commemorate and celebrate the transformative role of Vietnam war resisters and peace activists; it is time to strengthen our movement.
