[SDCPJ] Sat 4/30 City Attorney Forum & Reception

The San Diego City Council, Mayor Kevin Faulconer, and City Attorney Jan Goldsmith have declared Saturday, April 30, 2016 to be City Heights Law Day.

As part of the full day program, the evening will include a 

Sat. 4/30 CITY ATTORNEY FORUM & RECEPTION

@ Peace Campus, 3850 Westgate Place

Forum 5:30-8pm, inside Brethren Sanctuary

Reception (with food!) 8-9pm, inside Friends Center building

This is an opportunity for YOU to meet all 5 candidates & ask questions!

The Peace Resource Center of San Diego, established in 1980, promotes networking among peace and social justice-related organizations, with a program focused on peace education and offering nonviolent alternatives to conflict resolution. Recognizing the strong commitment to dialogue being necessary to the promotion of peace, the PRC has relished the opportunity to partner with the Friends of the City Heights Library in producing this open candidate forum.

All five of the Candidates for City Attorney will attend the forum.

Immediately afterward is a "Meet the City Attorney Candidates" reception inside the adjacent Friends Center building.

The San Diego City Attorney is an elected position described in the San Diego's City Charter is the "Constitution" of the City-our highest legal authority in the City.

Under the Charter, the City Attorney has three distinct roles: 

- Advisory: These provide advice to the City and each of its departments, including the City Council and Mayor;

- Civil Litigation: They prosecute or defend, as the case may be, civil lawsuits in which the City is a party; and 

- Criminal: They prosecute criminal misdemeanors and infractions committed within the City limits and in Poway.

Recently, there has been some controversy concerning who the City Attorney's "client" is?  The People of San Diego or the Mayor and City Council, collectively?  For example, in cases of conflicts between Police and the Public or if there is a difference between City Employees and the Public's  interests which side of a controversy does the City Attorney take?   The City Attorney Candidates debate may help to illuminate question.
